ultimate Ipac-RGB leds dont need riesisters?

So I am wireing some ramdon RGB led's for effects aroung my cab. I recently read up on the Ipac Ultimate, it is what I have used for the last three cabs, and I read that RGB leds dont need resisters because of constant currant.  :applaud:

I dont know alot about how all this stuff works but I have always solderd resisters on my led's but it would be nice if it really wasnt needed. Plus it would be nice t to make the wires smaller when bunched together because I am going to try and shuve  the four wires for a RGB led through a hollow JLF stick

Anyone got experience with this :dunno

Is the hollow JLF shaft threaded for 6mm or 10mm?
- Paradise Arcade carries both.
- Focus Attack only carries 6mm.
- AFAIK 5mm is the smallest commonly-available size for RGB LEDs.
- For 5mm RGB LEDs, you'll probably want 10mm threaded shafts and balltops.   ;)

Paradise offers this 5mm RGB LED with wires.

Since those are currently out-of-stock, you might want to make your own with common anode RGB LEDs and stranded 24 gauge wire.

 

1. Heat shrink is your friend.  In addition to covering the individual solder connections, you may want to add one piece around all four wires where they exit the shaft for strain relief.

2. Stagger the LED lead/wire solder connections.

   R lead --+-------------------- Red channel wire
   + lead --------------+-------- Power wire
   G lead --------+-------------- Green channel wire
   B lead --------------------+-- Blue channel wire

3. If you do choose to use resistors, connect them at least several inches after the wires exit the shaft.  No sense trying to cram the resistors inside the shaft.

    |--- Hollow shaft ---|
LED ---- LED wires ---------- Resistors -------- LED controller
    |--- Hollow shaft ---|

4. If there's a chance that kids or drunk friends are going to twist the joystick handles repeatedly, you might want to add a slip ring connection like this one or this one.

I buy from all those sites and they are all have been out for a while

I finally found some hollow shafts from a shop in France, but yea they are only 6MM

Money is not really a big deal, the rest of the cab cost so much already, so skimping on a high profile part is something I would do

I think Paradise still hass the 10mm hollow shafts left but I would have to have some custom balls made to match

Im cool with making my own led set up with soldering but I am wondering if I can skip the resisters if I use an Ipac ultimate

You could ask Andy himself, but I guess it to mean there is already a basic current regulator circuit on each LED output (probably supplying ~20mA). These can be pretty simple (a tiny 3-pin voltage regulation IC and a resistor) and can auto-adjust themselves for a range of LED values.

Putting an extra resistor on for each LED input would not do any harm, just make the LEDs dimmer.
