NBA Jam 4P Build
« on: February 06, 2022, 07:19:17 am »
After completing 2 project previously, I’ve recently had the itch to start another. My previous projects were a 2 player upright MAME build and a Jap Twin Daytona restoration and conversion for MAME/Model 2/latest racers.

So I thought next up should be a 4 player build. Was a tough choice between Simpsons, TMNT or NBA Jam but in the end went for an original midway NBA Jam.

So far I’ve made some decent progress. After using MDF on my first build I’ve gone for birch Ply this time. I sourced dimensions for the cab and then have made some adjustments. Had to widen the cab a little to allow for a 32” monitor and I tweaked the overall height and CP height to be similar to my previous build. Also took away some of the depth as the original is a beefy cab. Control panel and CP box however are exactly as original.

So far sides have been cut, base made and sides attached and I’ve also made the CPO Box. The box was tricky with all the angled cuts but was happy with the end result. Next up will be the control panel then mounting the monitor, cutting the speaker panel, making a front door and then finishing up the rest of the panels. Lastly paint, vinyl application and final assembly.

I’ve already bought all I need like buttons, joysticks, PC, graphics etc. Hoping to get more time over the coming weeks to make more progress. Attached are some pics of progress so far.

Awesome!  Some nice skills shown so far!  NBA JAM is right up there as a favourite of mine and if I was ever to build a one game cabinet, it would be this game (tournament edition).

I'll keep watching cause I like what you're doing!!

Paul.

Monitor has now been mounted. I also made panels for the tempered glass that will go in front of the monitor and a retainer for the glass to slot into.

Speaker panel has also been finished, and I’ve cut all remaining panels which are ready to be mounted. Not much left to do before paint. Just have to attach door below CP with concealed hinges and also put a hinge on the Control Panel. Then some filling and sanding.

Also received the joystick dust covers I ordered. Ordered 2 styles shown below and still deciding which way I’ll go.

I like the bottom dust covers better. When I did my NBA Jam style cab the one small adjustment I made, and it might be too late for this for you, was to put the joysticks in a straight line for playing games like Karate Champ, Smash TV, etc in 2 player

Project Complete! Finished a few months ago but haven't had a chance to post.

After my last post, I finished the rest of the mock-up, then some filling and sanding followed by paint. After some drying time, decals were applied. Lastly all the wiring was done and then completed setup/configuring of emulators and BigBox.

Happy with the end result. Turned out basically as I pictured and looks good with my other machines.

Nice job!

How did you figure out the button and joystick placement?  Did you use a template?  By chance do you still have a copy?  Trying to build one as well and couldn't find it on the web.

Thanks!
