New Product: Betson/Imperial Trackball Booster Kit
« on: February 27, 2004, 10:44:42 pm »
Now Available for $9.95 in the "Modifications" section of my online store.

Boost the speed and precision of your Betson/Imperial 3" Trackball with these Precision Laser-cut Stainless Steel replacement encoders.

No more multiple spins just to get your cursor from one side of the screen to the other!  No more "choppy" or inaccurate movement due to "software resolution upscaling"!

You won't believe the difference.

Each set includes 2 encoder wheels and takes about 10-minutes to install using only a philips screwdriver.

Note:  The PS/2 model Imperial Trackball works great with these.  The processor is very fast and I did not experience any "backspin" problems.  If you have the other version and it's mated to a slow interface (poor mouse hack or the like), you should still get much better precision, but some "backspin" could result from very fast motion.

There are so many ways to connect the "interface-less"  model that no-one can test them all (PS/2, USB, Mouse Hacks, Dedicated controllers, etc).  But as individuals report back with their data, it will be maintained on my site.

Thanks, and I hope others find these as essential as I do.

This sounds like a solid idea. But what I need first is some sort of "re-build" kit with bearings. My Betson ball rolls lame in one direction. Any ideas where to find that? Thanks.

I guess it depends on what it is you want to improve.  I expect that the Golden Tee game is set up specifically with the properties of the original Imperial trackball in mind.  Without being able to change the sensitivity settings of the game, you may find yourself altering the way it plays.

If you find that you need to spin the ball too much for your tastes, and the hardware can handle the extra data being thrown at it, this kit might be what you are looking for.

These are designed specifically for use with the Betson/Imperial trackballs.  Other models may follow if there is demand.

I encourage anyone looking for this type of product for a different mainstream trackball unit (Happ, Suzo, etc..) to scan the encoder wheel at 300dpi and email the image to me.  I can have samples made, and if you wish to be involved in the testing, there will be a free set of replacement encoders for your trouble.  ;)

Thanks,
