Do you have a cool job?
« on: February 27, 2004, 12:47:08 am »
I was just thinking about how many people are on this board and what a large group of mostly very intelegent people are here, and I got to thinking that some of these people probably do realy cool things for work.  So if you work for nasa, build robots for combat purposes or have just about any other job that you think is cooler than the average joe let us know.

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I have a cool job... I work in the Nuclear industry. Our American owners have decided we need to be cooler though and are throwing us all into the cold and moving all the jobs to the States. The best part? We're the strongest, most profitable company in our division. Our American sister companies actually lost money last year..... I guess losing one American dollar is better than making three Canadian dollars. I'll never be a CEO. As of this July I'm unemployed.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

surprisingly there are a lot of cool jobs listed in the What do you do for a living?? thread...

I'm a technology coordinator for a non-profit.  It's cool in that it's laid back and I get to do a variety of different geeky/techie/web thingies.

I work in a filthy warehouse lifting heavy boxes and breaking my back every day. How cool is that? (I know you all wish you were me!)

I work in a vocational high school teaching juniors and seniors the fine art of residential construction.  I get to be outdoors every day.  It is a two year program, so it is very laid back and in my position almost stress free.  Once in a while we get a discipline problem and then the job isn't as much fun, but for the most part, the kids are very good.

As a U.S. senator I have had a pretty good job for quite some time, but it looks like I will soon have the democrat nomination wrapped up and I don't think President Bush stands much of a chance for reelection.  So come this november I will have a REALLY cool job.  It'll be a lot of work, but I'll also be one of the most powerful people in the world.

I can't complain.

LOL :)   Sadly it looks like my campaign was doomed from the start.  I flared brightly from internet money but a 'rousing' speech in Iowa set me back a little.  Then I just burned out like a candle in some broken wind.

Oh Man!!! You lucky dog, I want that Job!!  I have to Commute 2 hours each way by train to New York City and do Technology Administrative Paper Pushing.  I would much rather stay at home with my 2 year old and teach him the ways of MAME.  It sure would be nice to go on field trips with him when he enters grammer school just to see the look on his face when the teacher says "Children, this was what your parents used to call and Arcade... Some of the machines are still in working condition but please don't touch them".

Oh well, I guess I could dream because I have to get back on the train Monday morning at 6:30am.... :(

AT least you have a job.   Unemployed sounds great until you realize you can't do much with it.   Even when I come up with something cheap to do (so far nothing involving MAME), I can't do it because my time is better spent looking for a job.

If someone asks why I'm responding to a poll: I'm networking.   I'm sticking to that story too.  :)

15 feet is about right.this dozer is called a pushcat it is not made for pushing dirt but pushing scrappers(the big machines on either side of it)i push them as they scrap the ground to fill up with dirt. beleive or not you dont see directly in front of the blade thats why when you see someone running a dozer they will back up until they can see what they are doing then go forward and do it.you mainly watch the bottom edges of the blade and move it acordingly. it takes years to really get good on one. basicly its like anything else practice practice practice.
sidenote: i had my nickname long before i even thought about doing this for a living.

You have my respect.  My father was a superintendent on road construction jobs for about 27 years, then had a second career as a motor grader operator for another 20 years before he retired.  I know you earn your money, my friend.

I conduct vulnerability assessments (among other things) for a major corporation.  I used to be on a leadership development program that let me change jobs often, and even sent me to Brazil for six months.

In high school I worked at an amusement park.  Sometimes I worked in the arcade.  I had all the fun jobs there including being a blacksmith, dressing up as a costume character, herding reindeer, selling tickets, and managing the park's network and databases (at age 16).  I even put together a roller coaster once.

Screw building web pages, I have ALWAYS wanted to be a copy writer or director for TV ads. I constantly analyze TV ads that I'm watching on TV and how they're targeted at people's psyche. I love the mental game behind developing ad campaigns, if only the industry wasn't so cut-throat.

....you have no idea just how cut throat this industry really is. I'm literally in a shitting match w/our LA office over an account I've been working on since last May!!!!.....it never ends. It's bad enough to get this from you client....it's worse from a "sister" office!!!!!!

Unfortunately, over-all our industry has been pretty screwed since early 2000. It's been all uphill for the last 3 years as marketing/advertising is ALWAYS cut first.

We've been hoping for a break soon....but it still hasn't happened.

 ???
But I keep plugging away....and playing Pac Man when it gets to be too much....serenity now!!! serenity now!!!!!
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

Steve,

Funny, I work as a data warehouse developer for a mid-sized IT company.  It is pretty fun but in no way cool.

In addition, prior to this I worked as a Project Manager for a tech company serving the foundation/non-profit community.  That job was fun, worked with MCI Foundation, March of Dimes, etc.

I used to have a real job doing IT for a major pharmacutical company.  Quit that about 6 years ago, now I'm a dance instructor & a DJ.  Swing dancing mostly.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.
