Joystick suggestions
« on: June 14, 2021, 12:17:43 pm »
I have to replace the joysticks on my machine and want to get something better quality than the long shaft Zippy's which I had. I like playing fighting games so am looking for an 8-way ball-top stick which is clicky and can mount under a 3/4" panel. Thanks for any advice!

If you want balltop,

Get a set of 8-way microswitch 4" wico joysticks.

They are the best.

Thanks Marsupial! I checked them out and it looks like Wicos for the win then.

I've been putting this upgrade off for way too long - switched P1 and P2 after pretty well destroying the first stick and now the second one is impossible to pull off any kind of precision moves with too so it's time!

Zippy aren't quality sticks. There are several better sticks than that in the Japanese style...

If you'd like battop, industrias Lorenzo eurosticks are great. For balltop the wico are king in the American scene, but lots of people go with Sanwa, Seimitsu or other Japanese sticks, which would be better than zippy any time.

On my mame CP, I have both eurosticks and wicos... For different games...

I think the zippy is based off Seimitsu  design is'nt it? never had one.

the sanwa JLF and it's clones ain't bad.. and the clones can be had cheap.. plus the post is threaded at the top so you can easily swap bat and ball tops.
I think the standard spring is about 1lb stringth, many people like the 2 or even 4lb springs for a little more pep.

It's a fairly straightforward design and easy to swap restricter plates on them.. a good general purpose stick but especially popular for fighting games where you need to hit half circles and diagnols.

Then there is the IL/Happ Competition.. which was in a lot of fighting games i Know midway used them for example.
thick, tough.. built like a brick crap house.

I think SNK used il/happ supers in their neo geo cabs.. personally I think the supers are garbage though.

the comp or JLF would be my pick but it's not like I have a ton of joysticks to compare.. but I know I hate most of everything else..

EDIT: Oh I missed the 3/4 panel, they make extended shafts for the JLF but you also change the joystick feels because it increases throw.

comps can be mounted under 3/4.. so I'd go with those.. the japaense joysticks are made for going in those thin metal/plastic panels so their shafts tend to be shorter.. not a good choice for under panel mount.

only thing is the comps' come with bat tops.. not ball.. and im sure someone some where made or modified one for a ball top I can't say I ever tried it.

I think it is, but the materuals ain't the same, and surely the switch are much cheaper. Maybe with proper switch they are OK.

hmm ya that looks promising..

I don't think I've ever played on a euro stick or if I did I didn't know it.

you're gonna want to get someones advice that has exp with the euro stick.. I just looked up a picture of one and it looks a LOT like a comp.. not sure the differences.

found this thread that might be interested in esp the first embedded video.. talks about euro/comp and after market shaft/ball tops

I've been running ball-top Happ Competitions on one of my control panels for a few years.  I think the Comp is a solid all-around stick but I dislike the feel of bat-tops so this combo works really well for me.

I converted the sticks using shaft/ball from GroovyGameGear but I'm not sure if they still sell them.

GGG still sells the Versa-Ball Mirrored Stainless, but there's no current listing for the Versa-Ball 2™ Multi-Compatible Ball-Top Joystick Shafts.

Does anyone own this particular IL euro style joystick with nylon square actuator and could confirm what gate it has? Round, square, octagonal? I can't find this info anywhere. It just says 8 way on websites.

The IL Eurojoystick/Happ Competition has a round gate and moves smoothly around it.

Found a breakdown photo here on Kowal's site.

Slagcoin also has some breakdown photos for these sticks.

According to the article the movement is a mix between round and square. You can smoothly make circles, but corners are still emphasized. So not round after all. Thanks for the link. I should have tried searching for info in my mother tongue aswell, I wouldn't have missed such great article.
