New Windows Arcade Build - Question about control encoders
« on: November 16, 2020, 05:14:44 pm »
Hey guys,

Building a new 24" full size arcade in the next few weeks after spending years never finishing a bartop build - it was always the prototype build. I am using the buttons and joystick from the bartop, as well as a couple of zero delay usb encoders. It has been a while since I played with it but I remember having issues with making sure that the player 1 controls were infact controller 1 and not controller 2. Is there a way I can make sure player 1 controls are seen as controller 1 in Windows??

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Consider switching to an iPac controller instead. You'll never have to worry about it being an issue, and you'll only need just 1 encoder for 2 players.

I had an ipac, but had untold problems when I started playing 2 player Steam fighting games, like SFIV and Mortal Kombat. Cannot remember what the issue was now as it was over a year ago. For non steam games, it was great..
Also is there any difference in input lag between the 2?

Thanks

Nick

iPacs, in general, are keyboard encoders. For a Steam game that is expecting a gamepad, this can be a problem. The zero delay encoders are seen as gamepads, so there's that.

I've always preferred ipacs but I'm mostly doing stuff in MAME. I don't think there's an appreciable difference in lag between the two.

Another option that isn't often mentioned is the 2 player Xin-Mo.

Since there's only one USB PCB that the computer sees as two gamepads, the player controls should always show up as the correct player.

I'll have to check out that Xin-Mo myself, looks to have alot of potential. Pretty easy to wire up too.

I've used the Zero Delay twice now. It's pretty decent for the $ and had considered an iPac before. I plan to build a 4p cab using one, but for 1 or 2 players, the Zero Delay is a lot of bang for the buck. That said, I think some encoders that use a certain protocol give Steam issues. Think xinput has something to do with it, but forget exactly. I had trouble getting my stick to work in Steam with Expendabros at first but got it sorted. Great Metal Slug type free game based on Bro Force. Check it out.
