Illuminating a coin door with a 12v adapter - sanity check please.

Hi, apologies for the noob question  .

I would like to buy a coin door for my scratch build arcade cabinet and the info states that you need 12v and ground either from your jamma board or your PC motherboard.

I was wondering if I could supply 12v to illuminate the button's via a 12v adapter (see attached). I would be using the screw connector terminal as circled in the picture.

Would I be correct in assuming the positive from the adapter would go to the 12v connection on the coin door and the negative from the adapter would go to ground on the coin door?

Would this work?

If this is scratch built, what are you using to power everything? I assume a PC power supply, which has a 12v and ground available from the 4 pin connector, see this image:


Just tap into the 12v and ground.


and if you do not plan on using quarters you don't need a full working coin door. For half the price you can get this:

I bought an off the shelf Lenovo which has a 180watt PSU with limited expansion possibilities so was looking for an alternative solution. I want to move away from the PC.

I want to go for the whole experience so i'll have coin mechs in mine, but I thank you for the suggestion.

If you're going to scratch build an Arcade cabinet, you might consider using a switching power supply to handle whatever 12v and 5v connections you need.

If you plan to have fluorescent lights, a monitor, in addition to that coin door, that article above will be helpful in wiring it up.

If you're planning on running everything off of a power strip then that adapter should be wired to the 12v hot wire and the ground wire that are hooked up to those lights.

Yep, That's what I did. Mine is used to power the led marquee lights and goes to a fan speed controller then top cooling fan. Simply plug into a smart strip so everything powers up together.
