Starting new build but need advice on screen flipping
« on: May 09, 2020, 09:34:27 am »
Hi, first post and in need of help so here goes .....

I have an original Taito Space Invaders table that i have owned for many years, several years ago the sound starting playing up, then the game started jittering and crashing and finally the display packed up with an explosive bang !

At the time i (possibly wrongly) stripped out the interior with grand ideas of a PC/MAME build that i never quite got around too and it spent a few years gathering dust, so i currently have an emptyish cabinet that i want to get going to start a new build on.

This is where the questions begin, now i am competent with electrics/electronics and have build many PCs over the years and even a couple of websites but i am now evaluating the best basis for the build

I originally thought it would be PC based, then recently when i decided to get going on it again i thought it would be retropie based (i have hardware for both) but my main requirement here is to keep the 2 player setup on opposite sides of the case, the original Sp Inv game would flip the display from side to side for 2 player battles and i am desperate to keep controls on both sides so we can enjoy some family gaming face to face but im struggling to find much about it

Im happy to spend the hours and do the research (i have already spent quite a while digging around the net) but could really do with some advice and hopefully a little direction regards my hardware/software options for the build and any info anyone can offer about display types/sizes/options etc

Thanks in advance for any replies

MAME on PC has all sorts of display options, and can do cocktail mode for the games that support it (and many that don't).

MAME on retropie probably has many of those same settings but I can't remember for sure.

Confirmed the following on MAME v0.162 -- may not work on the really old versions used in Retropie.

1. The ROM you're looking for is "invaders.zip".

2. Get the related art/layout files.

(MAME v0.107 or newer)
https://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php
- Upper left, "Filter by Game" pulldown, select "S", then press the "Filter By Game" icon.
- Save the invaders.zip file containing the art and layout files in the mame\artwork folder.  (Leave it zipped.)

(MAME v0.61 - 0.106)
https://mrdo.mameworld.info/old_artwork.php
- Save the invaders.zip file containing the art and layout files in the mame\artwork folder.  (Leave it zipped.)

3. After you launch Space Invaders, press TAB. (menu)

In the "Game Configuration" menu, change Upright to Cocktail. (press right arrow)

Highlight "Return to Previous Menu" and press ENTER.

In the "Video Options" menu, select "Color Overlay", "Standard", or "Pixel Aspect".
***- The "Cocktail" video option is not going to display the way you want. ***

That should get you started.   ;D
