Hi there.
It's since (way back) the 2004 that I don't put my hands on a PC MAME CRT setup.
I said 2004... it was when I converted my Jamma cabinet, with an Intervideo 25" in horizontal mount, into a MAME cab.
Its setup was an old (but fully functional and satisfiying!) Pentium III (800MHz), 512MB of RAM, ATI Radeon 7000 64MB RAM with hacked firmware, soft 15kHz and other stuff like PowerStrip, etc... all over a MAME 0.87 and the crappy Windows'98 before,"upgraded" to Xp after a few months.
I sold that cab since the 2009 when me and my little family had to move to another home/place and since then I only have my Dragon's Lair cab and an LCD MAME cabinet in my garage.
Just to say, I am not new to CRT stuff and, most of all, I am a player... I LIKE to play "my" games, mostly "Golden-Era" games or absoutely not '90s games at all, with some exception... and, I believe I know very well those games.
Well... in this forced "stay-at-home" situation we're all living here in Northern italy (but also in some other several countries all over the World) I am building a new CRT MAME PC setup with a PAL CRT 20" TV, connected with an "almost-perfect" VGA-to-SCART cable. bought from a Spain arcade e-shop.
I am just in the middle of a "deep research" to find what is best for the hardware I decided to use:
Pentium Dual (2.80x2), 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600 with 265MB RAM.
Windows Xp32 is my choose, due to the fact I also want laserdiscgames in the setup (no... don't begin to say "Use W7 !", because Daphne works well ONLY with Xp... let me say this, 'cause I'm a Daphne/Singe Team member/tester...) so I searched for 32 bit version of GroovyMAME.
Also, I often get involved in my favourite games and attempt an hi-score (as it happened for Pitfall II and Willow) so I need a WolfMAME release.
Well, I found a wolfmame32 arcade + groovy + nonag 0.190 version in b4nd1t0's repository (
https://b4nd1t0.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2017-11-01T00:30:00%2B01:00&max-results=7&start=35&by-date=false) and I have some question about GM in general:
> I got used to DirectDraw PixelPerfect, if we can call it that, and it's quite different from GM one...
I mean, I use WolfMAME 0.106 (yep... the 0.106 !!!) since years and it works very well with almost the 99% of the games it emulate.
I first tried this version with CRT Emudriver and I see it works pretty much the same as the old 0.87, which gave me pictures in P.P. (always if we can call it that) absolutely similar if not equal to the corresponding original games on PCB with which I used to make comparisons, of course made the necessary differences in execution speed (I don't think 0.87 could perfectly emulate the clock and the refresh of every single game, SPEAKING OF HORIZONTAL GAMES... because we know that for verticals there is the need to let them "fit in" the monitor >if we don't use a vertical monitor, at all<).
Then, the "new" GM 0.190 "coupled" with WMMaker's settings shows me that there are several differences from the DirectDraw pictures, in many horizontal games...
Maybe my memory betrays me, but from what I remember original PCB's screens was pretty much like the D.D. P.P. ...
Why this ?
I always thought D.D. drew the correct images, but watchin' on GM's I am thinking diferent...
What is the correct way ?
