Repairing USB cable for pre-2015 I-PAC board?
« on: March 14, 2020, 05:41:18 pm »
I was given another gentleman's "proof of concept" MAME arcade control panel that he had stored for several years.  It is equipped with an I-PAC board that requires the older USB cable for pre-2015 board but the USB end is missing due to a cat chewing on it. I can order a replacement but the shipping is double the price of the cable. If anyone knows how the USB end is wired, I can solder a new end on it.

Has anyone made this repair in the past?

Thanks,

Steve

the V+ and V- should be fairly obvious...one will be attached to ground...if you need to find the datasheet for an IC chip... and trace the VCC pin to the USB.

as for the data lines... just try them one way... if windows detects it (blong bling) its wired right... if nothing happens or windows plays a "bad insertion" sound (do do do). reverse the data lines.. other than just not working, you can't really harm anything by reversing D+ and D-. most USB devices/ports are protected against some pretty gnarly mess ups.

You are absolutely correct! The donor USB cable I started with didn’t have the standard RBGW colored wires. I cut apart a different cable and found that was the issue.  A little solder and electrical tape later, I have a working cable!

You just saved me nearly $30.

Thanks!
