Dedicated 4-Way Joystick Suggestion, Please
« on: March 06, 2020, 11:22:49 am »
Hey everyone,

I am working on a barcade setup that has 4 way joystick setup.  I believe I currently a 4/8 switchable joystick installed, magstik I believe, that I had lying around.  But I find when I switch to 4-way it can still do 8way, on a minor level.  The 8-way works great in my main cabinet but I always feel I do not get the precision I need for 4-way games.  So this cab is dedicated to the 4way(2way) and spinner.  Is there a standard 4way joystick you suggest that does not have any sort of switching mech?

Or maybe there are suggestions to get the 4/8 to work more precisely when using it in 4 way mode.

thanks,
Rich

I use a Sanwa LJW. You can set it to 4 way and leave it that way.

That being said my understanding is that with some 4 way joysticks its technically possible to hit diagonals. But whats more important is the joystick being physically restricted to 4 ways so that it kind of funnels you directly to UP, Down, Left or Right.

I can recommend the Sanwa JLW but I would warn against getting too obsessed with the whole thing. I mean I can still play 4-way games fine on an 8-way joystick. But of course I prefer a 4-way for 4-way games.

Precision is a weird word when you are talking about 4 directions...

If you are really worried about it, maybe look into getting a leaf switch style joystick... Like the Leaf-Pro from Groovy Game Gear.

It is sold out right now but the Groovy Game Gear Pac-Pro is an amazing 4-way stick. I prefer it to the Wico 4-way which used to be my gold standard.

Probably not a popular opinion but I really like the feel of the U360 in 4 way mode up/down bias for 4 way games. I have used both an 8-way and 4-way twice on a couple units but on the last one, I went with the U360. I was not sure I would like it without a restrictor plate but I think it is very comfortable without. I really like having just the one joystick on there also. Much cleaner. It did not take me long to get used to it. The bonus is that you can use it for q-bert and 8 way games and analog games as well.

I typically use Sanwa or Seimitsu for everything now just change up the gates and handles.

Regarding your mag stick though, I have one and it performs fine in 4 way mode with no chance of hitting a diagonal so I would defo check the underside of your stick to make sure everything is tight.

Also check that you have tightened up the lock nut on the bottom that holds the actuator etc on the bottom of the stick.

If thats not tight enough it does cause issues.

Happ Ms. Pac anniversary or Sanwa JLW.

Steer clear of the Sanwa JLF.

The GGG Pac Pro looks good, but I've never played with one.

Thanks for the input ad I will double check my magstik and make sure I have everything tight.  If I do that and still have issues i'll look into that pacstick.

thanks again for the info, gentlemen.

Just added an over lay to my CP and so I pulled out the magstick and when reattaching I tighetened everything down but it does not seem to have helped.  I have the diamond shape selected on the magstick, if that makes sense.

You mean you have it set to 4 way mode?
Got a pic of the bottom? Might help to diagnose the prob.
