Digital Leisure Games in XP
« on: February 16, 2004, 01:21:47 am »
I'm interested in purchasing some games from Ditgital Leisure.  And I see the most of the old games DVD games do not work in Windows XP.

Is this true?  As anyone been able to get this games to work in XP?

Let me know if your able to do it.

Found the answer to my question:

Windows XP Compatibility

The Dragon's Lair Deluxe Pack is not compatible with Windows XP.  Our DVD-ROM releases can be made to work under Windows XP using Windows 95 Compatibility Mode -- click here for more details. The Dragon's Lair Arcade Authentic version (CD-ROM) is XP compatible although there is a patch in our Downloads section that corrects a few issues. Note that the Arcade Authentic version is not the same as the Deluxe Pack. The Dragon's Lair 20th Anniversary Special Edition is XP compatible.

It's much better to rip the DVDs and use Daphne.  A much more arcade authentic experience, and it also works seamlessly with your favorite frontend!

I'm mainly looking to get Time Traveller.  And as far as I know, that doesn't work in Daphane.

Also, I want to get Drug Wars.

I agree that daphne is THE way to go! Not sure if it supports the games you are wanting to run though.  I couldn't beleive how fast space ace and dragons lair ran off the hard drive.....WOW.

Could you all explain or point me in the right direction for DAPHNE and how I go about getting Dragon's Lair.  I purchased the 20th Anniversary of Dragon's LAir from Digital Leisure and am awaiting arrival, but am concerned that this may have not been the right way to go based on your comments of DAPHNE.  Thanks!

No, you are fine with the 20'th anniv.  set.  Actually your better off having that set because there are some scenes added into that set that were previously deleted scenes.

Here is the link for the daphne web site.  Make sure you read the directions TO THE LETTER once you get your DVD set.

Good luck,

I purchased the (20th Anniversary)  sold on CD-ROM http://www.digitalleisure.com/pr/pr031105.html , is this going to be an issue with DAPHNE?  If so, any ideas? Also, where does one go to find mpeg2 and roms for other laserdisc games?

i never used daphne, but I think you have to rip the roms and mpeg stuff off the CD. saying where to download roms of them, would be pirating.

Actually the ROMs for Daphne are easy to find.

Buying the 20th Anniversary DVD is actually the best way to get the mpegs for Dragon's Lair.  There is a conversion process to rip t5he mpegs from the DVD's.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!

This is where people get confused when it comes to daphne and mpeg games. The MPEG clips (aka the game) is ripped from the dvd.
The "ROMS" are NOT the game itself.  The roms are just  instructions from the computer that told the laser disc player where to jump to after you made a move with the joystick  in the game.

So, the ROMS are prefectly legal to download and there is a link from daphne site where you can get several versions of the roms for space ace and dragons lair.  The mpegs you have to rip off of the dvd's. Like i said up top, the 20'th anniv. set is the best one to rip from because of the deleted scenes they added back into the games.  :)
Hope this clears it up a little :)

You all mentioned ripping the DVDs, but I have purchased the CD-ROM version.  Is it they same process to make the mpegs available for DAPHNE off of CDROM?  Appreciate the help!   :)

I pm'd ya.......... and yes the cdrom version you cant do a direct rip to use in daphne as they have already compressed the file to mpeg on the cd.....which means (if I am not mistaken) you would have to convert it back to dvd somehow since this is what daphne needs because it is emulating the original laser disc machine

The daphne site explains how to convert the digital leasure dvd's and how to convert the original laser discs but nothing on cd's

Far as i know the cd-rom versions are not compatible with daphne, however someone may correct me on that.  Sign up and visit the daphne forums and from there you can ask questions about cd-rom versions or just do a search on their forum and see if that question has already been asked.

Actually, you can use the CD version in Daphne. It is totally unsupported by them.  Someone made a conversion utility for it, but the graphics are really bad, nothing like the DVD version.

However, if you want to test Daphne and have an old CD version, then it is good to test with.

You'll need a dvd ROM.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

You are correct hulkster.  You only need to read the DVD's with a DVD-ROM drive.  You don't have to burn any disks.

sweet, okay so what i could do is buy the dvd games from digital leisure, rip them to my hard drive, then download the rom images from the daphne or other sites, and then put combine them in mamewah or some other frontend?
