LaunchBox + screen saver
« on: October 21, 2019, 08:41:53 am »
I have a problem where I can't stop Windows screen saver.

I'm running Win10 Pro 64bit with all updates + latest LauncgBox/BigBox and have two joysticks (something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-No-Delay-Arcade-USB-Encoder-PC-to-Joystick-For-2pin-Japan-Type-Push-buttons/183056340724) connected.
I want to use screen saver to display family photos (digital photoframe) which works really well but I cant get back to LaunchBox/BigBox using joysticks, the only way to do it is to press a key on keyboard or move mouse but both are hidden away.
I have checked all power saving options for USB devices and it's all turned off, I have tries installing joy to key software but nothing works. Funny thing is that when I'm testing screen saver with "Preview" option then joystick works but when screen saver comes on after given time then moving joystick or pressing buttons will not stop it...

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I haven't used an actual "Screen Saver" in Windows since the early XP days, but is it possible Windows is turning off power to your joystick device when the Screen Saver kicks in? I would check in Device Manager and make sure the option to let Windows turn off the device to save power is unchecked.

Tomton isnt there an attract mode setting in Launchbox?  If I'm understanding you correctly the Windows 10 screensaver is disabling Launchbox.  My thought would be to disable the Windows 10 screensaver and use attract mode in Launchbox / Big Box.

i went through all that, turned off power saving for all USB devices and allowed all of them to wake system but joysticks will not stop screen saver. I have tried another USB joystick (8Bitdo) and it will not stop screen saver either.

Attract mode is cool but I want to use alternative screen saver to display photos. Because I have LCD marquee I have found application that can display different random photo on each screen so on main screen it shows photos from my album and on the marquee screen it displays random game marquee. I really like how this works and my wife likes that large digital photoframe with new photo every 10 seconds :-)

so far the only way i have found to get round my problem is to change PC power button behaviour to "Turn off the display" and pressing it twice (power button is hidden under control panel but easily accessible)

I am trying to answer this without being majorly sarcastic, however I am English so I shall be sarcastic at the end

It sounds as if it is going into sleep mode and not waking up. I would look at turning off the sleep function. I always have my PC's with this turned off, the hard drives are always on, this would be in your power settings, you need to create your own settings, by default you have balanced etc.

Now for the sarcastic part

1) Using Windows 10 especially for a cabinet is like teaching Stevie Wonder to drive or fly a plane. You just do not do it. I was a beta tester for a lot of Microgreed's operating systems, 10 was brilliant until it reached the final pre release beta, and then it went to a crawl. I thought mmm, ok I shall wait for the updates and it was still awful. I went back to Windows 7, a couple of years later, I decided to give it another try because of wanting to use the xbox with it, and I re formatted back to Windows 7 in less than 24 hours, it was still that bad.

I will also that is it a spy ware, ransom ware operating system, which was designed to compete with the android market, where you download a FREE game, but then you have to spend £100,000 on gold just to complete the game. It really is a scum ware operating system.

2) Lunchbox as a frontend? Yuck even worse than Windows 10

3) Get a divorce, it is an ARCADE CABINET not a picture frame. It is like buying a home cinema screen, dolby atmos, and movie projector and having that as a picture frame, when it costs £500 for a replacement bulb. You just do not do it.

However, trying adjusting your power settings, getting rid of windows 10, changing your front end, before the divorcee, after all they are the more expensive option ;)

Regards

Mark
