d9400 multi-sync monitor wont sync through crt emudriver
« on: October 14, 2019, 11:31:28 am »
Hi guys.  I have a groovymame PC setup that has been working with a crt tv through a transcoder. I  picked up a Wells Gardner d9400 (wgm2794-u0ts40e) multi-sync monitor yesterday, and i cannot get it to sync. The screen shows "no signal in" , but i can see the windows test mode scrolling across the bottom of the screen. I have used several crt tv's in the past, with 4 graphics cards, and i have no problem getting 240 p signal from them.

I have tried all 4 cards with the WG monitor using vga and dvi-i connections, and i still cannot get sync.
I have tried composite sync, changed H and V sync to positive, and still nothing. I know there is something I am overlooking. Does anyone have any ideas?
I can get sync from the MOBO vga socket. I am able to get 640x480 and 800x600 from the onboard vga, so i know the monitor is working correctly.

Here is something interesting. I was doing some research, and there were a few other guys that had the same issue. Some were able to correct it by changing cables. When i researched which VGA pins were necessary to send signal to an arcade monitor, i found that some pins could be eliminated. I wired a VGA connector to a section of cable and added a VGA breakout board to the other side only using the absolute necessary pins. It synced immediately!  so somewhere there is interference added through a pin in DVI-i connectors that isnt present in VGA?  My issue now is that everything on the screen has a blue tint. Im sure there is a bad connection somewhere. I will try to chase it down.

Success! to anyone else that cant get their d9400 to sync there is a very simple solution. I pulled pin 9 out of the vga cable.  either side will work.  I'm sending this on my arcade pc at 800x600. This really beats using a transcoder and a CRT TV.  Edit: just an addendum to this post in case it helps anyone. There are 15 pin d-sub/vga cables available which send 5 volts through pin 9, and there are also 14 pin cables in which pin 9 is missing. Upon doing some research it turns out that pin 9 used to carry a key signal and at some point that was no longer used. More recently they began sending 5 volts to pin 9 to allow the PC to gather maximum resolution Info from the display. That explains why changing cables eliminates the problem for some users.
