Found a Barcade while traveling...
« on: September 11, 2019, 09:29:41 pm »
Great little place in Durham NC - BoxCar Bar + Arcade.

Had a nice collection of new and old machines -

Lucky me - they had a real *working* Centipede.
But I need to know - how is it I can crush a real machine, but my Mame machine is so much tougher..

I played 2 times and set my highest score since college (which I think was 350K...  but who knows)..
High score on Mame is 179K

This one did not feel slow.
So what is it?  Screen size? (which doesn't make sense to me really)  However - next time I'm measuring..

The only thing that maybe feels different is the trackball - the speed is the same (I checked.. it moves 3 mushrooms edge to edge..  like others I've tested)
But somehow the *resolution* seems courser..  which is the best way I can describe it vs. my Happ trackball at home..

I was in the zone .. maybe I'm just getting better.

While I was there - Galaga was very popular with the college age students - and Donkey Kong was getting a workout too.

On the surface - owning a Barcade would be cool...  But I bet it is just as tough as any other restaurant.

So, this is where an exploration into GroovyMame and frame-delay is particularly relevant.  You want to get the input lag to be as close to PCB as possible and on an LCD it’s important.

Each configuration is a step on the way to authenticity. Native resolution display on a post-90s CRT is different than one before it, particularly with 25+ inch. In some cases, emulation is not accurate. Centipede suffers from the first, and may suffer slightly yet noticably in the second. Recent experience and mentation on this lends me to think the issue may be on the player and the 'rhythm' of a configuration with which they match.
