cd rom isnt recognized on my new asus mobo...help!
« on: February 14, 2004, 03:54:15 pm »
i got a new ASUS motherboard with new processor and all that.  i have an pre-existing hard drive that is installed as well.  everythign is running fine and windows 98se is recognizing everything fine.  it starts to want to install the new drivers for the motherboard, etc. and then asks me for the windows 98se cd.  so i put it in the cd rom drive, the LED comes on so im suspecting that its fine.  well i try to click OK and it says that the cd is not found.  i click on "browse" to look for the specific folder for the cd rom drive, and when i do that, the CD ROM drive doesnt even show up in the list that i can choose from.  the floppy and hard drive are both there, but no cd rom drive.  power is connected and all that.  what could be the problem?  i have only one hard drive and one floppy.  very simple pc, so what should the jumpers be set to on the cd rom drive just to make sure thats not that problem.  everything is basically brand new.  ive even switched out cd rom drives to make sure that it wasnt a bad drive.  help!

Is the drive on it's own channel?  If not, move it to it's own channel.

If you have two ide controllers on the motherboard.  You should have your harddrive on one... and the CD rom on the other (both harddrive AND CDroms jumpers set to master)...  This will require two cables also.  This will be your fastest settings.

If you cant.... and you have to have them both on the same cable / ide controller... Then you will want to have the harddrive set to master.  And the CDrom set to slave.   NOTE:  Some drives don't like each other (harddrive and hardrive slave).  But most harddrives will master most cdroms.

This might be your problem.

Other then that... if its new... it might be bad.  Do you have an old one thats known good around?

okay i messed with the jumpers a little and changed both the cd rom and hard drive to master.  i gave each their own cable and plugged the hard drive into the primary controller and cd rom into the secondary.  the cd rom is recognized now as the secondary master, but the hard drive is not recognized at all now.  what happened?!

Switch the jumpers to cable select and see if that does anything.

k, changed the jumpers both to cable select, with each on their own controller and cable.  went to the bios, changed the primary master to "user hdd" and the secondary master to "cd-rom"...booted up, and now the hard drive works, but the cd rom does not!  geez.  help again.

p.s. - just to make sure, looking at my ide cables....does it matter which plug is plugged into each drive.  like, i have the ide cables where one end goes to the motherboard (its blue) and then there are the two other plugs that are close together.  which one goes on the drive?  does it matter?  i mean, if i switch something to Master, and each drive is on its own cable....do i need to plug a certain one in instead of the other?

Did you check ASUS's web site maybe they have a BOIS update that might fix the problem. Or do a search with google you might not be the only one with that problem. Am I correct in thinking that you are using a new motherboard with a HDD from another computer that has a op system installed in it?

I hadn't even thought of that.  Is your CD Drive showing in the BIOS, but not when using the system?

Also I am pretty sure when using IDE cables that have two connectors on the end and you are using one drive on the cable the drive connects to the first plug on the cable not the one on the very end.

okay, yes i have a new mobo with a hard drive with win98se already installed on it.  all my mame stuff is on it so i dont want to lose it.  would updating the bios mess it up?  its a brand new mobo, so i guess it should be already updated.  ill change my plugs though and see what happens.  about the cd rom drive showing up in the bios, i can select "cd rom" from the menu when i push enter on the Primary Master or Secondar Master options.  you know what im talking about?  its selectable to pick what i want as my master, so im guessing that the pc is seeing it, just not in windows.

Aww man hate to break your heart but I did the same thing. I got a new motherboard six months ago and I thought since I am using all the same cards I will just install my hard drive from the old system and let windows ask me for drivers that the new motherboard needs. Not so lucky when the system booted and windows started I got errors left and right nothing worked. Had to do a format and fresh install after that EVERYTHING worked great. Best thing you can do is get a portable USB hard drive enclosure and transfer all your roms and important stuff to it. And when windows is running fine then reinstall your roms. Your old system has USB I hope

Ok how's this then. On the computer you are using now to view these forums take the hard drive you are trying to install and put the jumper to slave put it in the working computer on the open plug on your main ide cable and that system should be able to read it transfer all your needed stuff to that systems HDD. Then you can format the HDD to use it in your new system. And with a router you can connect the two computers together and get back your needed files.

Ok hulkster, Give this a try.
On your hard drive, remove all of the jumper pins and then connect it to the last connector on the ribbon.  I have had to do this more then once and i have no explanation to why.  It should have worked setting the jumper on the hard drive to master. I even double checked with the instructions to make sure that i had the jumpers oriented right, but nothing worked until i totally removed the jumpers from the ack of the hard drive, then it worked great.

As a rule of thumb, if you have a hard drive and a cd-rom drive, set up each on its own ribbon. Set each one so its set to MASTER and then hook each one up to the last connector on the ribbon, making them each a  primary.   So in review, you have say, HARD DRIVE hooked to IDE1 and all the jumpers either totally removed or set to MASTER and then hooked on the LAST ribbon connector (primary).  And the same will be done for IDE2.
Hopefully this will solve your delima. :) Let us  know :)

Just a side note, one program that i  SWEAR by for backups is called NORTON GHOST.  It makes an image of your hard drive and if you can "ghost" it to another  hard drive and you will have an exact image of your first.  Its fast, easy and what i like best is you can even go in and pick specific files out of the ghosted image and put them whereever you  want them.   Its really nice.  If you don't have a backup program, i highly recommend this one.
Also, it might be a good idea to have a DVD writer. lol. Makes backups alot less tedious :)

okay i removed the jumpers for both the HD and the cd rom, and plugged the last connector on the ide cable into each one, and started the pc. i went into the bios, and its recognizing both drives, however when im starting up windows and going through loading the isa bridge and all that, it wont let me read off the win98se cd....same as before.  so its seeing both drives in the bios, but not in windows.  what do i do now?

If the BIOS sees the drives then your cables/drives are ok. I am almost positive it is because you are using a HDD that has a op system installed from another motherboard. Everyone I asked this morning who builds systems all said the same thing when building a system use a formatted HDD. When setting up windows you get that screen "setup is checking your systems hardware config" I think that is the point where windows gets to know your motherboard.

Or this might work try starting the system with a win98 startup/boot disk. You should be able reinstall win98. If your roms are on a diffrent partion on the disk win98 willl reinstall without walking over anything not related to win98.

Maybe i misspoke.  Only leave the jumpers off the hard drive. You will need to set the cd-rom jumper to master.  Then you should be good to go.

Ah, now I see!  Get a Windows bootdisk from http://www.bootdisks.com (if I got the URL wrong, leave the 's' off bootdisk next time).  You should be able to use your CD drive then, as drive 'R'.

well im one step ahead of you on the boot disk.com thing. ;D  i got a boot disk.

heres the latest on my problem.  im using one ide cable, i have the hd on master, and cd rom set as slave now.  the bios recognizes both but i still get the same problem when im trying to do the install for the mobo drivers and stuff.  so what i did was to go back into the bios and change the boot sequence so that the cd rom boots first, and for some reason it read it, and i can boot from the cd rom now.  i have the option of booting from the hard drive or cd rom (you know that one screen)....what now.

Just so you know...the opposite is true. The end is master...only should matter on C/S but some controllers are flakey.

Don't boot form cd. Boot to your HD and go to control Panel choose Add New Hardware and search for the HD...you may have to add it manually.

BTW do you have PNP OS enabled in your Bios?

Just to make this a long story short, its NOT recommended to use a previous windows installation when your installing a new motherboard.  About the best thing you can do is just install windows over the previous version, althought even this is not a gurantee for a hassle free installation.
If you want to totally avoid the possibility of future grief, just do a fresh install after wipeing the hard drive or at the very least, boot to DOS and do a DELTREE C:\WINDOWS and then a DELTREE C:\PROGRA~1     that will wipe anything related to windows and programs.   If you have other files that you want to keep move them to a  separate folder on the c: drive somewhere.   Your best bet is to copy your windows cd-rom to a place on your hard drive.  I always call it  c:\winbak  and then boot to dos, run the deltree commands  from the main C:\   (to get to the c:\  or in other words the ROOT type this -
CD\
After the deltree is all done, type CD C:\WINBAK  (or whatever  the folder was you made for windows backup from the cd) and run SETUP from there. Then you will be rockin and with less headache then i think your going to end up with trying to skirt around having to reinstall windows.

Good luck.

I bet Windows was just expecting a different CD-Rom drive.  I didn't even think about this until now...oh well...glad to see you got things working.

well no not solved.  now i have a registry error.  it kept giving me errors...look at my other post on this board (in main forum) and see what im talking about. ive since formatted from the command prompt and am now running scandisk.  hopefully everything is fine.  if not i dont know what im going to do.  im going to try reinstalling win98.  i have win2k....should i install that instead?  would that fix the problem maybe?

No, if theres something hardware related, it wont help you anymore then where you are now.
Why confuse the issue more. lol

Something you can try  is to download a memory checking program and see if it find anything.
here is a link for a good tester.

Also, you can usually download hard drive diagnostics from your hard drive manufacturer, which can be run in dos as well, through a boot disk.    Those two kinds of tests should give you a good solid idea if something is screwy. Who made your hard drive? I can look for a dos diagnostic for you if you want.

well i just ran the scandisk utitilty for the c drive, and there were no bad clusters and it didnt find any errors.  i formatted the hard drive again and then installed windows.  it was fine, until i started installing mobo drivers that came with the cd.  i dont know if its related to this or not, but its really starting to piss me off.  i get the registry error, but now its in windows and it says its going to restart.  i havent clicked OK yet, but as soon as i restart, im sure ill get the error about the registry but in the startup now and it wont even let me get into windows.  do i need to flash the bios, or um....i dont know, do something else?!  this is getting frustrating.
