Mike A's end to procrastination
« on: July 09, 2019, 10:16:03 pm »
All of you non purists better find your safe space. It is time for me to build something.
I started this weekend. Here is what I have so far. I am losing a fight with a bottle of rum right now so it is the perfect time to take a break, start up my Metal Pandora station, and document what I have done so far.

I picked up this garbage cab. I think it is being held together by crappy paint. I was originally going to restore this cab. I still might....eventually. No patience for that right now.

Time to template and build from scratch.

Part of the front was really trashed. I finished it off on my table saw later.

This is why you need to use quality 1/2 inch bits. The bearing exploded on this crappy bit.

This is the result. More freakin work. I will have to use wood filler and fix this later.

This is why you clamp down your work.

That's better.

These grooves are for placing the blocking. They are just deep enough to accurately place the blocks.
I will glue them down and use brad nails to clamp them in place.

Ohhh. Beefy.

Now to cut some blocking.

The factory edge is against the fence. I will assume it is straight.

Always use push blocks. I just use scrap wood. It is better than using fingers.

So that is where I am right now. I have to go to Home Depot for some 1 inch brad nails for my finish nailer. The 1 and 1/4 nails I have might be a tad too long. The ply is about 3/4 and the blocking is the same. The blocking will sit in a groove and the nails penetrate some. That is too close for comfort.

The next step after securing the blocking is to duplicate it for the other side.

How many buttons should each player have? The age old question rears its ugly head. This cab will be only used for 4 player games. I have WW Cowboys of Moo Mesa, and Super High Impact PCBs. I will probably have to also shove a MAME computer in there as an option. I work for a living. I can't afford those TMNT PCBs. There are tons of 4 player games. I just have to figure out if the 4 button games are worth the extra hassle. Three buttons are probably good.

The artwork can wait. It will be done when it is done. I can apply it after the cab is finished. The only hassle will be pulling all of the CP controls to install the CP artwork.

Sailor Jerry is telling me it is sleepy time now. I don't know how much progress I will make during the work week. I don't intend for this project to drag on. I want to finish the cab and get it in my arcade lineup.

I say go 2 buttons each, and use this for button 3 inputs: https://riddledtv.com/arcade/condenser_boards.html#2to3button

Could save you some drilling hassle, but backload the work on the wiring. Also, $25 each is a bit tough, but perhaps RiddledTV can give you a deal. He has sales now and then.

I don’t know many beat-em-ups that have 4 buttons per, other than the D&D games. And most of the 3-button titles use button 3 as a special attack. A 2-button combo to get button 3 is perfectly fine, and you could really free up space on your CP for 4 trackballs and spinners.

4 buttons for players 3 and 4.  Spend the 10 seconds per game it takes to remap them so you don't have dead buttons. So that means Simpsons has 2 jump buttons and  2 attack buttons.  Just do it. Be amazed that people won't realize they can jump in those games because  "I didn't want to press that button because I didn't know what it does."

The table saw is an old Home Depot model. I built the table from scrap wood I had laying around. I junked the old fence and traded with a friend for a good quality fence. I added the router later. I have another table the same size, but a hair shorter. I can use it as an out feed table. They both use locking casters. Awhile back I had a close call with a board that kicked back on me. I bought the fence guide wheels after that happened to me. As a bonus the wheels are turned towards the fence at 5 degrees. It helps guide the work piece towards the fence.

I was thinking the same thing. Getting three button functionality with 2 buttons I think is the way to go. That will make for less clutter on the CP.

That is a sensible idea too. I will have to get some cardboard out and see what is comfortable.

I am not setting up more buttons for P1 and P2. I have a candy cab that can handle 2 player, 6 button games.

This cab is mainly being built to get my candy cab back from the elementary school terrorists that monopolize my candy cab at every party.

I have a SFII Champion Edition PCB on the way. I need my candy cab to practice up for the next Zapcon.

That guy has some nice solutions. I bought his new multi PCB kit. I don't think it is on his site yet, but he announced it on KLOV. It has 8 slots connected by ribbon cables. I have a couple Konami classic pinout boards and a JAMMA board hooked up to my Time Pilot cab.

I finally find a game I can beat Mikey at, and he orders the PCB just to show me up at the next one.  Bring it Big Boy!

The first pics are from my barn. It is a pain in the ass to haul full sheets of ply into my basement work dungeon.
Milk crates are a great tool.
They are stackable storage. They are step stools. They can be used as a tool box or a sawhorse. They are durable and mine were free from the time my company owned retail stores.

At this risk of sounding friendly, that's some good work. That's nice looking plywood that the bit cut into. Hate when that happens. I rebuild a touchmaster for one of my jukebox projects using a trace bit. One of my favorite tools.

We may banter outside of project announcements, but it's good that people can separate the debates and arguments from good ol' fashion solid work.
