Raspberry Pi 4 is out
« on: June 24, 2019, 01:50:31 pm »
https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b/?variant=raspberry-pi-4-model-b-4gb

Raspberry Pi 4 is out. 3 Models 1gb, 2gb or 4gb ram. $35, $45 & $55 respectively.

I ordered a 4gb, but they are on backorder. CanaKit has the 1gb and 2gb available now as well.

https://www.canakit.com/raspberry-pi-4-2gb.html

Still way too early to get any solid info on what they can do, but my kids love the setup I made for them with a 3. Hoping that the 4 will open up some better N64 or maybe even decent DC emulation.

I saw this and immediately went to order one, had in in the cart and everything. Then I remembered that I did the exact same thing 3 years ago when the Pi 3 was announced and that thing's been sitting in a desk drawer ever since.

I lolled.

I did the same exact thing with the first Pi.

And the C.H.I.P.

I have so many projects lined up that I won't need anything until the Pi 37 comes out. Which should be a couple years before Javeryh finishes his bartop.

I bought a Pi 3 from a buddy at work, who was gracious enough to set it up for me with RetroPi.  Played it for about a week till I couldn't stand the bad input lag and emulation on some systems.  Even after countless hours of tweaking with settings.
It's been collecting dust ever since.

I'm going to tear it apart and use it for my Naomi NetDIMM setup.

Kinda annoyed as last week I picked up a pi3a to solve the power issues I was getting with the 3b. This using USB c gives more options. Ah well. It will be interesting to see what newer stuff it can run.

Pi 3 is great.........for a lazy, small form setup when particulars don't matter.

That being said, that is surprisingly a pretty wide berth for for me to find use in it. I am finding new life in those old LCDs I have been hording for years. These are worth it to avoid the headache of setting up a PC rig, which can way too long for with a fresh copy of windows.

Would be awesome to get one running Stepmania or Dreamcast.  I haven't noticed any major lag with my Pis but I'm not anywhere near Opt in terms of playing abilities.

+1 on Stepmania and Dreamcast.

Back during my year of stay at home Dad back in Lao, I had a R-pi urning retro pi on an LCD via composite. It was pretty sweet. Retro Pi makes some odd choses by default, like not using Nestopia as the default NES emulator. I couldn't play punch out until I figured that one out.

Looking forward to upgrading one of my ARpiCADE boxes when it's supported... it'll be hard not to upgrade two of the three I have running (I doubt my 4-way vertical cabinet really needs the Pi4)...

from what i've read stepmania compiles and runs on pi3 but it's dog slow.
maybe 4 has the guts.

Benchmarks are out.  Looks like the Pi4 is legit and should run dreamcast with ease.  Also looks like it can be overclocked to 1.75 and be stable with the GPU overclocked to 600 too.

Would the rpi4 with this retrolink or other rgb output board make a decent application for my 2 player mame cab/wg9200 arcade monitor/ipac? Looking to replace my dead pc and get something running quickly for the summer.. I'm not a purist and groovymame/pc tinkering took forever. If so, do you recommend 1/2/4 gig?

That's the one aspect of this otherwise very welcome announcement that leaves a slightly sour taste in my mouth.

The RPi Foundation has stated quite categorically on numerous occasions over the past year that they would not release a Raspberry Pi 4 until 2020 at the very earliest. And yet here we are half-way through 2019 and they've done precisely that. They also pulled exactly the same trick when the Pi 2 was released.

Of course I understand why they do it. They want to protect sales of their existing product lines in the months prior to the release of a new model. However, that doesn't justify lying to potential customers. IMHO, anyone who's just bought a Pi 3B+ has the right to feel slightly cheated.

my experience is larger roms like newer golden axe games won't run on 1GB of ram on any device in mame.
if you don't care about those games stick with 1GB.
I'd probably go 2 GB's myself.

Spend the extra pittance and get more RAM. I think the 1GB option only exists so they can still have an offering at their time-honored $35 price point.

Dreamcast for sure is the draw for me personally, Would love to be able to play Rush 2049 and all the other things a Pi can do already.  I think this one will have the power to overcome a good portion of the Mame lag issues many have seen, assuming effort is put into the coding, which with the support the Pi gets I am sure that will happen.  Give this thing a couple months to work out the bugs and we will all have less of a reason to look at the Odroid..  Could even be a cheap way to get Mom and Dad or Grandma and Grandpa on Facebook, if you were so inclined..

among the great news with pi4 is that it (finally) has an open pixel clock, which means that, with a little time, we can reach "perfect emulation" (yeah, i know that perfect is a very personnal opinion about emulation, input lag, display etc ...)

Really starting to think all the people running emulation are like 90% of their market.  Seems like everything I'm hearing about changes in about this version was only to make them better for old games...

Yeah, read I got the same vibe. Emulation by a landslide, followed by media centers PCs. I also see stuff on Carputers, which as far as I figured out, is just media center PC for the car.

The only other applications I ever hear about for them are network appliance type stuff like Pi-Hole, the kind of thing that isn't hardware hungry and can still work fine on a Pi 2. Everything else is always emulation, emulation, emulation.

I'm afraid of sounding too harsh if I say that you definitely have no idea of what a pi is really capable of ... NAS, kodi system, home stuff, straming server, control any hardware through its GPIO, camera ... and sooo much more ... just read https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/

Oh look, network appliance type stuff that doesn't require any of the hardware improvements since the Pi 2.

Just because itís capable of all those things, pbjís Point is still valid. Nobody cares about what the applications for this are, as long as they can play teh romz. Most people in casual conversation donít mention all the non- gaming uses for the piís. All they care about is emulation.

Then it's pretty normal you just consider a pi as an emulation system :) That's a choice, not a worldwide fact ;)
