Anyone seen g4 networks starcade
« on: February 12, 2004, 10:28:16 pm »
Ok so the other night I woke up and couldn't go to sleep and while surfing the new digital cable . I found a network that I didn't even know I had G4 for those of you who don't know is a television station for video gammers

Anyways the show starcade was on sometime around 4 am. I nearly fell out of my chair I have never heard or saw this show before. It was produced in the mid 80's . I am not 100% sure because the roman numeral date thing  flashed to quickly.

Anyways there are 2 teams and they play real arcade games the highest score wins the round . there are 3 rounds . The winner plays a bonus round to win aa arcade game for their home .One of the games they played  was atari's crystal castles.

I thought this show was cool and thought I would point it out to people in case they have never seen it before. I would also like to hear about some of the other episodes you may have seen .

The show airs 2 times daily from what I have seen.

I remember this show!  It used to air on TBS, or maybe USA network, about 4pm.  I used to run home from school to catch it.  There's a whole website with various clips from the show, some of the prizes bring back a lot of memories.

The theme music has a big chunk borrowed from Xevious, IIRC...

I remeber watching this show as a kid too. Had no idea it was still on, but I don't think DirecTV has the G4 network, I've never heard of it.

The show itself is so poorly conceived it's laughable.  They add your score's up from different games, but on 1 game, the score ranges will be from like 100 to 500, and then on the next game, it will be from 10,000 to 100,0000, which makes the first game pointless.  Aside from that, it's all timed, and you get so little time to play.  It is fun to watch anyways, but I just like to gripe.

Aside from that, G4 is a fun channel, but they need more content.  Also, not sure if you guys had seen this: http://www.salon.com/ent/tv/feature/2003/05/08/crusher_g4/index_np.html It's a good read... but if you're lazy, the jist (gyst?) of it is that Will Wheaton, of Star Trek fame was going to be the host of their FPS gameshow, Arena.  Well apparently it was all rigged, it wasnt a gameshow at all, although it was going to be presented as one.  So Will quit, saying that wasn't what he signed on for, it was dishonest to the viewer, whatever.  Small time news, but anything involving Will Wheaton and video games is a geek classic news item, and needs to not be glazed over.

Starcade is great! I nerd in me, he loves it so much. I think it's the best show on G4...which is sort of sad...considering it's 20 years old.
For pure video game news and reviews on TV, I prefer the Tech TV XPlay...that's a pretty decent show.
But yeah, Starcade is cool. What is also cool is if you go to the website, they have a "Where are they now?" thing for most of the contestants. See how they grew up, maybe what they look like, how super nerdy they are now. It's Tony the Tiger Grrrrreat.

Heck yeah.. I remember seein it from back in the day (MCMLXXX... is 1980 fyi for the next time it flashes the date quick, you can ignore the first part)

http://www.starcade.tv if you follow the links a few deep you can play the name that game game and other stuff

I think its on in the afternoon too, if Im playin hooky from work Ill sometimes put it on at 3pm or whatever- beats the hell outta Oprah  ;D

I wish there was more on G4 that pertained to arcade games, but I suppose in order for them to stay current and relevant it needs to be consoleCONSOLECONSOLE and pc games

Cinematech is a cool show to look out for- it's a 1/2 hour prog with 10 to 20 2-3 minute clips from games new and old, some set to tunes.
