Arcade VGA won't work on arcade monitor??? Help!
« on: February 12, 2004, 01:16:37 am »
Just got my jamma cab all hooked up with a jpac and arcadevga.  When I first started the PC up it came up fine on the arcade monitor(although a little blurry and letters were hard to read), so I installed the arcadevga driver, and when it rebooted it came up on my regular PC monitor that I have plugged in the other output.  Now I can't get anything to go back to the arcade monitor??  I've tried everything and can't get it.  Can anyone help?

Just got done hooking my ArcadeVGA + J-PAC up for the first time about 2 hours ago.

Windows on an arcade monitor in glorious 640x288 resolution...

I followed the instructions to the letter...

put in ArcadeVGA
connect to JPAC
connect JPAC to Jamma connector
boot computer
install ati drivers
install ati control panel
switch res to 640x288 32 bit color.

I never had a regular PC monitor connected to it at any time.

Have you tried just disconnecting the PC monitor?

You should probably read the section of the ArcadeVGA installation page titled "Using the top VGA connector on the card"...

Aparently, there's some issues with running an arcade monitor and PC monitor at the same time.  It think it has something to do with "clone mode".

I played around a little more.  I think the problem is, it made my pc monitor the primary and I can't change it.  I got the arcade to 640X288 only then everything I open is too big and I can't get to anything.  Also no matter what setting I use, I can't read the menu in Mamewah, it's all fuzzy.  Games play fine.

To run windows on the arcade monitor, you have a few options...

640x288 Non-Interlaced
640x480 Interlaced
800x600 Interlaced
1024x768 Auto-Pan (XP and 2000 only)

As you say, 640x288 non-interlaced is small and hard to use but at least it's not flickering.

640x480 Interlaced and 800x600 Interlaced both flicker a LOT but you can use them if you need to configure windows.

Eventually, my MAME computer will be running Windows 2000 and I'll give the autopan a try but for now, I'm using 640x288 non-interlaced.

Oh, and for some reason, it initially wouldn't do 640x288 non-interlaced, it only gave me that option after I rebooted a few times.  Go figure.

Forget the x288 resolution.  Most games are x240 or less, so if you start them up, you're probably going to loose the vertical sync!

Your best bet is to run windows @ 640x480 and choose a frontend that can change the resolution of the screen to something windows doesn't support.  I run MAMEWAH at 368x240!

I haven't had any problems with vertical sync so far.   Maybe my monitor is just very tolerant.

Do know any specific games I should try that are particularly problematic?
