Capcom Home Arcade Announced
« on: April 16, 2019, 11:57:01 am »
It looks like it’s an official version of those Pandora Box/joystick combos you see on eBay and AliExpress. Preorder in Europe is €240 so it’s a bit more expensive than the knock offs with less games.

Not a fan of the gimmicky design over practicality. Obviously not a product designed for use so much as for display on an LED-lit shelf behind some bugman recording his latest YouTube video reminding everyone to like, comment, and subscribe.

I like it.

[Doc Brown]  I figure, if you are going to make a crappy emulation box, you might as well do it with a little style! [/Doc Brown]

That being said, the price is too high and it uses Japanese controls, so I'll never be buying it, but it's still pretty cool.

Solid game list.  Surprised to see Alien vs Predator on there.

Yeah but probably not THAT surprising considering fox/disney owns them both now and they've each appeared as guest characters in MK XL.  I don't like all these crappy guest characters in my MK mucking up the storyline, but if it leads to AVP getting official releases I'm all for it.  It's one of the best beat-em-ups hands down.

Again they haven't bothered to properly license it.

FBA is under a strict non-commercial license, and the devs have had no involvement.  (Not that they could relicense FBA anyway without going through the same monumental effort MAME went through at 0.172)

http://neo-source.com/index.php?topic=3344.msg26661#new

So it's just another bootleg system.

Again I'll state, it isn't difficult to get this right, use an emulator that permits commercial use, that's basically MAME 0.172 or newer for arcade stuff as those are distributed under the GPL 2.0 license.
https://wiki.mamedev.org/index.php/Is_MAME_Open_Source%3F

Also if you want to do CPS2 you'll want something fairly recent as once you've used something with the improved Qsound emulation that went in a few months ago it's very difficult to go back, even if the difference/ effects seem subtle at first you really notice what's missing once it's not there.

If the license holders don't care enough to enforce their license then why should anyone else care? Enforce it or shut up about it.

Well if they're using unlicensed emulators in their product then it's commercial piracy, so it's up to saint if he actually wants to allow things like that to discussed here.

If he does, I don't really see why he isn't just letting people post rom links etc.

I'm just letting you know that the FBA devs have said it's an unlicensed bootleg product and that once again a company has ignored the legal options available to them, despite the monumental effort that was made (at the cost of real development time) to hand them one on a silver plate a few years back.

Interesting info, Haze. I do appreciate your weighing in on these things.

It would be funny if Capcom went after somebody for using their roms in an unlicensed manner, and in turn somebody turned around and pointed this out.

Discussion of has always been allowed. We can discuss 60 in 1 boards and A1Ups we cant link to ROM sites. Trying to equate the 2 is an over simplification.

Mike A makes a valid point, if you don't care enough to enforce the license why should end users care?

It's going to have a hi score database I think.

Btw weren't cps2 roms encrypted and had suicide batteries and what-not?  Reverse engineering that, even just to write an emulator would technically be cracking the games and that is a violation of the DMCA in most instances.  So wouldn't all cps2 emulators be illegal in the US anyway?

I don't get the venom.  Capcom made the games and the hardware, so you certainly couldn't argue that selling them would be ill-gotten gains.  Thanks to the efforts of people who's goal is supposed to be game preservation, their more accurate emulators are going to be used instead of shoddy ports, so their goal is met.  Seems like a win-win to me.

That wifi is a missed opportunity for monthly subscriptions for co-op, tournaments, and vs competition.

Adding online accounts, tournaments etc, is a whole other level of magnitude of complexity
that that company would have to deal with.

It's not Capcom that's making this machine.

Manufactured by Koch Media GmbH under license from CAPCOM

Looks like it is just another third party device trying to get their share of the market and not actually a Capcom product at all - and they licensed the ROms but didn't bother to make their own or license the emulator they are using in it.

we're all in this together.
Nah they'll never ever see it like this. For the very devs of the #1 emulator who have dumped coded and distributed all that for two decades and millions of people have naturally used for playing games, all users are filthy pirates... mamedev hate pretty much all retro-gaming communities, this one is no exception.
Talented hard working devs who gave humanity a precious gift, but equally a bunch of schizophrenic condescending arses endless circlejerking in their ivory tower.

(don't forget the emuversal chatbox, taken minutes ago:)
Code: [Select]
R. Belmont: also, arcade controls likes MAME and hates MAMEdev.
Haze: they like being able to take advantage of something, but don't care how much their actions cause problems for those actually providing them with said thing
Haze: it's a very parasitic community
Haze: even when you do bend to accommodate them they just see it as a weakness that they can use to actually break you
Haze: so I don't bother to bend for them at all.
If we listened to you mamedev, nobody in this world should use MAME at all, yet praise you and agree to everything you say and do all day even if it's cringeworthy af. Maybe put Haze on a leash instead of letting him piss on users everywhere he can on the internet - he's been doing that for years no wonder he ends up getting defacto hate everywhere he goes, visit and read his blog and try to tell me the guy is not lost in paranoid narcissistic dementia - wake up, then maybe people will begin to like you again.
If you despise people for using your software for it's very intended purpose, which happens by your hand, if you can't bear the consequences then close source and go away already, take a long vacation and sign for group therapy because you've lost sense of reality.
Oh I know! as long as you've got even a handful of deaf-blind fans with Stockholm Syndrome that'll be enough a validation for you in public, still I laugh hard because reality is that you lose users and supporters every day.
Maybe mamedev will have reached their ideal the day they're finally completely isolated, self-congratuling in their randian bubble, completely ignored by the masses of vile users playing all kind of crap emu boxes while ignoring whoever you are and whatever you do and did.
And it'll be only those user peasant's fault, right? yeah zero responsibility from the emu dev gods, they're always right, right? yosh yosh, keep dreaming mame overlords. keep dreaming...

You know what they say about brilliant jerks, no matter how good they are in the end their attitude ruins it.

If he stood up for MAME when it was used in a commercial way I'd be more inclined to be on his side about this. I still have my Hanaho CD that was bundled in with my Hotrod, it featured Capcom ROMs and a version of MAME that probably also was/is violating the MAME license.

https://strider.fandom.com/wiki/Capcom_Coin-Op_Classics_Series_1

I honestly dont care what Haze thinks of me or this community, all of my arcade machines run real hardware (on CRT monitors ;) )

Capcom isnt making this, they just licensed the IPs.

Eh I called Haze out on his b.s. long before it was fashionable because I realized that mame was intentionally trying to make the end user experience more difficult than it should be, which, like it or not, is the OPPOSITE of game preservation.   You preserve something so that everyone can enjoy it, not so that it can be locked away.  Devs can work on whatever they want to work on... I fully support that, but at some point, if your goal actually is game preservation, you have to sit down and organize the thing and give the end-user some sort of index that'll let them explore the library easily.  It is NOT up to third parties to do simple things like sort the emulated games/systems/whatever into some series of logical categories, if for no other reason than doing it in-house is the best way to ensure accuracy.  Getting mad when emulators, which are normally locked behind a paywall of specific knowledge, are exposed to the general public with easy access is just an extension of that.

But I'm rambling....Anyway

That doesn't mean that all mamedevs hate users or that a lot of them aren't on our side...it also doesn't mean that Haze hasn't done a massive amount of work that benefits the community at large….. it's just that somehow Haze has become their defacto representative around here... and he isn't any more suited to be a representative of the project than I should be a representative of byoac.  His passions, agree with them or not, get in the way of impartiality and good old fashioned common sense.  That's 100% understandable considering how close he's been to the project over the years, but yeah, maybe the other mamedevs could get him to put a sock in it once in a while.  Complacency equates to agreement and they should keep that in mind.

From what I've seen of Haze, he is remarkably restrained, given that people here attack him much more than they honestly argue against his points.

Not sure what else there is to discuss about the software.  FBA devs say it's licensed.  Any other commentary on that arrangement is just speculation.

From what I've seen of Haze, he is remarkably restrained, given that people here attack him much more than they honestly argue against his points.

I agree with you 100% on this point.

Buahaha you guys don't know Haze or what, that restraint is so forced, for years this guy's been writing pages-long preaches full of bile and hypocrisy, against users, other devs, communities. Within the condescending group in mame that's never refrained from trashing people, he's the most vile, I know his true colors, a champion at triggering drama for the purpose of playing victim, a pro at propaganda. So I make sure to give him a warm welcome once in a while.
I don't care that people don't know or don't like non-consensual opinions on mame and its people, those guys never refrained from beating and soiling people publicly and there's no law compelling me to approve them and be nice. That's and ex-believer speaking here, yeah they can do that to people, I used to love and believe in mame with force, and if today I look down on them (well at least the core horribilis group); know that it's looking back.
Took me maybe 15 years or so but I had the red pill and realized mame devs aren't into video games at all, and don't care about people, users, gamers in the least, they're not sharing the same plane of existence humans  with petty desires live in. It's a group of super geeks probably thinking themselves as saints with a mission hovering over the rest of the world, dreaming of an unrealistic utopia special to their kind...that will never concretize further than a mere portion of what they've imagined anyway.

Which is good !  :P

Going back to the Capcom thing, and specifically it using FBA. You know, that bootleggers, like the retroarch crowd, are settling on old mame builds and resurrect an emulator like FBA which had gone into oblivion for years, really hints at what's going on.

I haven't launched MAME at all in 2019, and the last time I did was v0.125.

Yeah it's sad.   I used to write code for the thing, but the first time I've fired it up in over a year was yesterday to check out some unibios key combos for a super gun I'm building.... the version on there is so old it only has unibios 3.0 on there.  I used to enjoy new releases of mame... getting excited about what new games are added or new features, code cleanup ect.  That's passed unfortunately.  Not 100% the mamedev's fault as the list of unemulated games/systems is getting smaller all the time, but I'm just pretty sure that subsequent mame releases aren't going to be anything I'll be interested in.
