Local arcade
« on: April 07, 2019, 09:00:12 pm »
I had to go to a nearby mall to get a warranty replacement for my phone's screen protector.  I haven't been to that mall in probably 10 years.  Walking in I spotted a couple arcade games and walked in and was surprised they actually had a nice little collection of games so I snapped a few photos:

That's really cool man.  I like the stuff they put on top of the cabinets.... it seems like people would try to steal it or knock it over though.

Probably why they have security cameras installed...

Good call... I didn't see the camera the first time around.  Also note that the bane of at least 50% of byoac lies just behind the defender cab.  They are selling (*gasp*) arcade1up cabs.

That's an amazing line-up for a mall nowadays.  Our local barcades don't have some of those games.  Also I don't think I've ever seen two Star Wars lined up like that let alone three.  Most impressive.

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, that is nice. I bet that’s someone personal collection, and they took advantage of cheap mall space. THAT’S the way to do it!

Your telling me.  The gun game lineup is what catches my eye.... that and the street fighter cab with the street fighter ONE artwork.  If I only had the time.... malls around here are ghost towns, you could probably get a good deal on rent.

Yeah I thought it had to be a collector.  I tried to talk to the guy up front a little.  I started saying wow you have a nice collection of games here and mentioned I had just bought my first arcade game Defender.  Then I mentioned I was going to Zapcon next month.  He didn't know what that was so I explained it and then he said you should talk to <two names I don't recall>.  So he walked over to 2 younger guys sitting behind a counter with their faces buried in cellphones and prompted them to talk to me.  I mentioned Zapcon to those 2 and they stared at me like I was crazy so it was feeling awkward and I left.  I'll go back another day when I have more time.  I'm curious if any of them are on KLOV and who does their repairs.  I didn't take pictures of the front room but it was more of a store and that is where the A1Ups were as well as one of those giant led screens where folks could play Pacman, Galaga, etc.

Nice. There's still an arcade in the mall here. It was an Aladdin's Castle, now called Time Out. There aren't that many traditional cabs in it, though. It's mostly amusement type games now.

You know I can't recall ever playing Crystal Castles before.  Maybe as a kid my local arcade didn't have it or I was stuck on playing other games.  I keep seeing people on KLOV calling it their "grail" game.

After just spending a bunch of time on improving my Defender monitor I walked up to their machine and said to myself....dude you need to turn the red drive down...it was bleeding a half inch over from the logo.

The few games I remember seeing listed had $50.  There was not a single person in the arcade beside myself when I walked through but I did go in the middle of the day on a Saturday.  Not sure if it picks up later in the evening.

I assume thats 50 cents not dollars right!?

That would seem reasonable to me though I wouldn’t mind dropping 50p our money for a game.

Was going to say it will be interesting to see how long it stays open and whether the games stay looking in that condition and working - seems it must be a fairly slow location as the machines all seem to be in working order and not heavily abused. ( though I'm sure the smoking laws do help on that front ! )  :dunno

Its not a grail game for me, but I'd like to own one.  I hadnt played one in YEARS until Zapcon 2 years ago.  I was actually considering the 12in1 A1up just for that game :p

Yeah I just noticed that.  My brain was thinking cents when I hit the dollar sign...lol.

Eh CC aka "pacman with a trackball" is ok.  It's nothing special imho though.  What's always perplexed me about it are the graphics.... is that supposed to be a real bear or a dude in a bear suit?  Either answer just leads to more questions.

Yeah I might have to checkout Crystal Castles on my MAME cab.  They had a few A1Ups setup in the front store section.  I didn't comment on them because I've had enough of reading lew rants.  I had pretty much the same reaction as when I see one of those tiny smart cars going down the road.  I don't hate them and wouldn't run them off the road but they just make me laugh.

Sorry I thought my location was on the left but I must be thinking of KLOV.  This was at the Tucson Mall in Arizona.

Those who would go to an arcade are typically drinking age, and like to drink while they play, and start to show up around eight o'clock.

I have loved Crystal Castles since I saw it in '83. Love the cab, too, though it is a mutant twin of Millipede.
