control panel questions

Hi All:

I'm finalizing my control panel design....

its going to be a 2 player panel....
(after I shrink the pic... its not very clear...)

but from left to right....
4 way stick... 8 way stick... 6 buttons... spinner.. trackball... 8 way stick... 6 buttons...

and then some start coin buttons and mouse buttons on top.

the panel is about 36 inch in width....
and I'm planning about 14-15 in deep...

question:

as you see... then 4 way and the 8 way is right next to each other... I'm planning that only 1 stick will be used at 1 time... (but not both at the same time...)

how far apart do they need to be for it to be comfortable ??
(I would like to know the distance between the sticks...)

also.... I was originally planning to do artwork on the ctrl panel... but since my cab will be wood pattern... I don't think it'll mach very well... (and I have next to zero art skill...).  So.. I'm thinking of adding a layer of those black-vinyl-top-thingy and then add a piece of lexan....

I have seen it a few times... but I forgot what is the name and this makes it hard to search....  I think you can buy like 1 roll of it....

yes, the reason I still want a piece of something of top is because I'm going to countersink all screw holes so that the cp will look as clean as possible.....

the cab is basically standing now... (well... if you want to call it cab... might as well call it a computer desk... which will have a CP on top... haa haa...)
