Where to get Plexi Glass in Australia
« on: February 10, 2004, 12:14:34 am »
I am currently trying to source some Plexi Glass here in Australia (Perth to be exact) and have come to a dead end.   :'(

My question is does any one know where I can get this from here in Australia?

Cheers...

Plexiglass is a standard item for larger hardware stores and home supply stores. Any of them should have it.

It might possibly have a different common name in Au, which is why you might be missing it. Just go to the biggest hardware/home supply store and it should be there.

Here in NSW I get both smoked and clear perspex sheets from HardwareHouse/Bunnings for about $45 a sheet (900x600).

.....I just had a look and it's called HandiClear Premium polycarbonate sheeting.  Made by Bayer Australia and is 900x600x3mm.  99.9% UV protection available in grey or clear.

This is what I used on my cabaret control panel (grey).

I'm pretty sure Bunnings sells plexi glass, I'm not sure if you have Bunnings in Perth, also you might want to check out car audio places because they use a lot of plexi in some of their bass boxes, they obviously must get it from somewhere. I think cdbrown is based in Perth he might know where to get it.

I'm in Melbourne, so not that much help I guess,  ;)  but my brother-in-law just gave me a tip - a plastics company (sell mainly to signwriters etc) in Nth Melbourne called Alternative Plastics sells off-cuts and "scrap" pieces of varying sizes for about $30 (depending on size).

I'm hoping to pick up a couple of pieces for my marquee  . . . but haven't got there yet myself. . .

but maybe worth looking through the Perth yellow pages for similar sorts of places?

Looking at their website it looks like Bunnings are based in WA so you shouldn't have a problem.  The 3 local stores I have been to all have the stuff I listed earlier and they all had it in the same section as their similarly sized sheets of MDF and melamine.

Like I said, around $45 for a 900x600x3mm sheet of clear or grey(smoked).

Cheers

I'm not in Australia, but here's what I did. I pulled out the phone book and looked up 'plastics'. Lo and behold I found a place about two miles from where I work that sells nothing but Plexiglass. They cut the pieces I needed and it was dirt cheap.

Plexiglass is usually called "Perspex" in the United Kingdom.  I think the same is true in Australia as well.

It's called both here in Oz.  It's good to know I'm not the only one from Perth on these boards.  Unfortunately I haven't checked to see where to get them from yet.  I would have made my first stop at Bunnings just for convenience then moved on to a plastics manufacturer - perhaps someone like Cadillac Plastics.
