  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
I am making an LCD marquee for the Arcade 1UP machines:

The area is 18 inch (Width) x 5 inch (Height)

Here's one LCD panel example:

There are several options, depending on your budget, and how you want it to look:

====================================================================
Code: [Select]
Option Details Diagonal Size(s) Resolution Aspect Ratio AV Inputs Cost Range

1 LCD Picture Frame Dumb frame, uses SD Cards 7 inch - 11 inch 800x480 - 1920x1080 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 16:10 NONE $40 - $150
2 LCD Panel Interactive, + LCD controller + remote 7 inch [6 in x3.6 in] 800x480 5:3 VGA, HDMI $30
3 LCD Panel Interactive + LCD controller 12.3 inch [11.5 x 4.3] 1280x480 8:3 [16:6, 2.67:1] DVI, VGA, HDMI $130
4 LCD Panel Interactive, Toshiba exclusive 14.4 inch [13.2 x 5.7] 1792x768 7:3 [21:9, 2.33:1] Unknown $70
5 LCD Panel Interactive + LCD Controller, TOSHIBA 14.9 inch [14.3 x 4.3] 1280x390 16:5 [33:10, 3.3:1] VGA $110
6 LCD Panel Interactive, LG 17.1 inch [14.5 x 9.1] 1440x900 16:10 HDMI $15
7 LCD Panel Interactive, Virtolight 23 inch - 45 inch Variable resolutions of 1920 x nnn Variable ratios of 3:1 and larger Custom, HDMI, VGA $300 - $1000

Notes:
----------------

1 You will have supply the pictures, adapt the frame, and maybe gut it to fit.

2 - 7 You supply the input source. Whether its another PC, Standalone media player, or Amazon firestick. Each will need its own power source, and cables.

3 Most versatile Inputs

4 Great resolution for the price, hard or impossible to find standalone LCD controller.

6 Best value, but nonstandard resolution may not work on many input devices.

7 The virtolight custom LCD modules are super expensive, but are heavy duty:

So what are you going to fill the space around the marquee with?

Are any of them IPS so they look good off angle?

An lcd marquee is a great idea but not if it changes a lot based on where you stand.

Still working on it, possibly a frame, hooks, we'll see what it looks like first.

Great News: You CAN use AMAZON firestick ($20) as a media player

For initial setup, you will need to create an amazon account [no money needed], and have internet access.

Fortunately, to run the application, YOU DO NOT NEED INTERNET ACCESS

1 Buy a used amazon firestick, any model

2 Install ES file explorer [free]

3 Run network settings, run remotely

4 It will display an FTP address

5 Run FTP program from PC/phone/tablet with artwork

6 Transfer image files to Firestick, and remember folder

7 You can disconnect from internet

8 Go to settings -> manage applications -> run application

9 Now you can run applications. In ES explorer, browse to images. Display images.

There is a tiny little circular icon on the far right, but it's not a big deal.

For the monitor I got, the 17.1 inch, the viewing angles are excellent, and much better than the stock Arcade 1up one.

various images of the LCD Marquee I used: Images are washed out, because of pictures in the dark.
The real ones that are cropped, have a black background that is not noticeable.

I added white to the Pac-Man background, maybe I will do that for the others to fill the screen.

Lipstick on a pig.

$15 lipstick on a $100 pig for me.

also, any of these work on non-'pig' arcade cabinets too.

even regular size ones. so if yours looks bad, you can spruce it up with this.

Very cool.  I've been wanting to add one to my GroovyMAME setup that's outputting to a BVM Monitor.  Is there anything out there freestanding that could be sat on top of it?

Also, it looks like that last option linked to from the OP does have HDMI...would need a digital display as the build is already using my one analog out for the main display.

Thanks!

agreed, one of the multi input ones with DVI or VGA are more suitable if you're linking them up.
