I'm using dedicated buttons for pause and exit, and shif buttons for tab, some f keys, coin and some other stuff I can't actually remember :)

I don't have an IPac (I'm using a KB hack), but I do use MAME's built-in shift functions.

I have 3 admin buttons on my panel: FUNCTION (shift), PAUSE and EXIT.

What happens if two of your guest players hit their start buttons at the same time?  Does it exit the game, or am I not understanding how the shift option works?

It's actually pretty common when my son and I play side scrolling beat-em-ups like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Battletoads. I end up having to play on the 1P side all of the time so that I can regulate the "1 up / Shift key" smacking.

I am thinking about "hiding" the shift key button somewhere out of the way like the top of the cabinet and running it with tokens and a dedicated exit button. Jury is still out on this one, though.
