New build and had a couple questions
« on: September 02, 2018, 08:21:38 pm »
After doing a lot of research, I was going to build a raspberry pi 3/Mame set up and keep it as simple as possible. But after doing a little searching around the house and addict. I found a PS3 in good condition and a 2 terabyte hard drive. Now my question is has anyone ran a mame or arch system off of the PlayStation console? I was thinking about turning my PS3 into a computer that runs Linux after watching some videos and then using that to collect all of the games I used off all the systems I owned over the years. Has anyone else tried this? Is it possible ? Am I better off running a pi ?

I know nothing about emulation on the ps3. However, the ps3 cell processor is a vastly different architecture than the x86 and arm platform. This could be one hurdle for the operating system and it handles graphics. The next issue is 256mb of ram. Running a game which probably includes frameworks/libraries specifically for a game vs a complete GUI operating system and low level emulation on top of that - completely different.

In short - even if it works, don’t do it. You likely won’t get any results you will be happy with unless there was a huge community involvement. It’s the only reason the rpi, with it’s relatively low specs, has success with emulation.

Sell or trade the PS3 for a old Windows PC. This will be much easier to setup.
