cocktail cabinet question
« on: February 06, 2004, 02:56:06 am »
I know that there has probably been many questions about cocktail cabinets but I have started building one myself here and I am using the Kyle Lindstrom plans off the net so far so good actually it is all going together very well so far I am taking my time with it and all, I only have like one question here about making the actual table top itself which has been the worst for me here, 1" thick plywoood was a speacial order in my area which was okay as I was able to find it but now I am on my decision of monitor and also about the actual cutout for the monitor, well 19" monitors were pretty standard I would Imagine for the original and all but one thing that is puzzling me as I cannot get a look at a actual top is the cutout how to set the bezel in etc., may sound crazy but was wondering how to set this up I have not seen to much detail so far around on the net about it but would like to know about cutting that opening and allowing for a bezel if anyone here could give me some pointers I shure would appreaciate it thanks.

What you should probably do is first order your plastic 19" bezel, and then cut out the hole in your top to match up with that. Specifically to go around the raised part of it. So the raised part is inside the  top. That is the way I would do it.

I am picking up one of those tables next weekend, so I can provide more detail then if no one else is able to give a better/more accurate answer before then.

I started a discussion about this topic recently.  In order to not have the top glass contact the monitor and have the monitor flush against the bezel, you need to mount the bezel to the underside of the cocktail top.  Use a router to make the "ledge" for the bezel to fit in, drill some holes and attach the bezel.  I then needed 3" tall, 3/4" thich pieces of hardwood to attach betweek the top and the monitor mounting brackets.

To give everything a finished look, I would suggest that you smooth out and paint the inside edge of the top black.  Then route out a ledge for smoked plexi or glass to be installed on the top side of the top, with clear glass top mounted over everything.

I really need to snap some pictures of how I did this and set up a web page since I spent a lot of time (and questions)   trying to figure it out myself.

Okay now that makes sense to me how this is done, I know at this stage in me building my cabinet I am so close and I wanted this part to come out correctly as well so did you use like screws to mount the bezel into the wood?  I got a look at a MS Pac man cabinet today and the overlay is damaged to where I could see the opening and it looked like it had a screw holding the bezel in but  see again I could not tell what was going on with it, so you basically mount the bezel to the underneath side then use the plexi on top to smooth out the top and make it flush this sounds like a very good way of doing this I appreaciate you sharing this with me and yeah man if you had the time or was willing to put pictures of how you did it would be great but I do think I understand how you did it now thanks so much for the help, also another question that comes to mind is I have heard alot about mounting themonitor now I have a monitor that came out of a cocktail here and it looks like it has the holes in the frame work to mount with now because of the weight of these monitors do they just use screws into the wood or how is that done I hate to ask questions like this but I have never read a clear answer on this one either as it seems like the monitor is so heavy that the screws might not hold it if someone could elaborate on this also would be appreaciated.
