shipping charge: does this seem right?
« on: February 04, 2004, 08:28:28 pm »
I just got a $50 order from Happ in 2 boxes (total 8 lbs). and the shipping charge was $19!!!

Ouch!

I live in Illinois.  They shipped it out of Illinois.  I guess I should have fought traffic and driven there.

Is this in line with your experience?

Did you order a bezel or marquee retainer or some other oversize item?

Well, I ordered a roll of vinyl  that came in a 4 foot tube.  but it didn't seem too oversize to me.

I also live in Illinois, southside Chicago, and ordered 22 buttons, a 3'' trackball mounting plate, and a marquee PVC retainer strip and shipping was over 20 bucks. I also thought that was high.

where in illinois do you live? If you're reasonably close to elk grove, just pick your orders up from the warehouse.

I live in the southwest burbs.

Unfortunately the only time I can get away during the week is during Rush hour.  I drove up to the warehouse for surplusvillage.com to pick up a monitor (just north of O'hare) and the round trip ended up taking 4 hours !!!

I would say I've got more money than time, but the way this project is going I'm pretty much running out of both.

LOL I am sorry not lauging at the tragedy but happ SERSIOULLY need to fix their problems.
Why ship a roll of vinyl on a tube and charge $50 shipping when you can just put that in a box or something :P

Yeah I paid 57$ shipping for a monitor bezel and marquee retainer. What you gonna doh, can't buy em elsewhere.

This has been discussed before.

The shipping cost for oversize items is due to UPS's shipping rates, not Happ.  If you ask them to, Happ will cut marquee retainers to fit in a smaller box which will reduce the shipping cost.

Came home tonight and my stuff was on the back porch. Your right about the marquee stuff, it was in a 5 foot tube, verything else was packed well and I got it very quickly. I even got my Happ track ball that I ordered from Gatorcade.com in the same shipment. Next time I might take the drive though, maybe stop at Santa's Village. LOL

$57!?!?  OK - now I feel better.

It did show up 1 day after I ordered it, which was pretty cool.

Only $19?

I live in Canada and my shipping charge (on an order worth about $90 USD) was $57 Cdn (about $42 USD).  Most of that was a brokerage charge (customs) with UPS.  And that was for a single package weighing about 4 lb.

Its UPS, not really happs.  I live in IL but have only ordered buttons and joysticks and that shipping is reasonable.

Look at UPS's business plan.  Everything goes to a central location (there may be a few central locations) and then is delivered from there.

I think your issue is with UPS, not Happs.

Holy crap!  How many times does this have to come up.  It's NOT Happs.  Take the weight/dimensions of the box you got and see what UPS charges and you'll see the high rates are from UPS.

And Snaake... how do you think they could ship a roll of vinyl in a box!?  If I order a roll of vinyl that is 40" wide, that's what I want...  Do you expect them to unroll the vinyl and fold it up and wrinkle it to stuff it in a small box?  Have you ever tried to put vinyl on anything after it's been folded and wrinkled?

If at all possible, order from Bob Roberts.  Heck, I bought

2 Happ Super Joysticks Black
1 Happ Ultimate Joys 4-way Red
1 Happ Microswitch PBs Pair Player 1 & 2
21 Happ Microswitch Pushbuttons

Shipping was
USPS Priority - $8.90
Now granted you have to send him a money order, but I ordered something 12/15 of last year, sent him a MO the next day and had the stuff by 12/25.  Can not beat that with a stick.

I tried to order from Bob but he never replied to my email, also his prices on some things were slightly higher than Happs but nothing I ordered was significantly more or less. I gave up on bob and placed an order with happs and had it in 2 days. It was $5.50 in shipping with tracking and insurance. I don't know if Bob insures and tracks everything but its definately worth the extra cost.

From everything I've heard Bob he is an incredible help and can provide parts that are hard to find elsewhere its just that he needs to update his site and offer a more convenient faster way to pay. He also needs to reply to emails.

How many emails did you send him, eightbit?  If it was one, then you can assume it was lost somewhere.  It happens quite frequently, esp these days with rampant email viruses running about.

As for Bob's business practices, this isn't his mainline, although it keeps him busy.  He's a retired operator, and does this because he enjoys it.  His prices are quite reasonable (because of his 'discounted' shipping more likely than not) and he almost always tosses in something for free.

If you read Bob's site he explains why he doesnt take other forms of payment.  Basically he would have to charge extra for paypal and then worry about getting dicked around by them like so many people do.  Also he cant really do CC payments becuase they are to expensive for a ma and pop type thing (they charge you every time you run a CC and for just having a machine/service).  Really check/MO is the fastest way to go maybe a little pain to get a MO made but shipping is dirt cheap with him and he is a great guy to deal with.

Also email wise he has always responded and very quickly within like 12 hours.

Great, I was hoping there were some fellow people from Illinois, I finally ordered all the last things I need to start building my first cabinet. It will be a two piece kinda like Frosty's with a laminate base and baltic birch ply for the top, why baltic birch? Cause it routes and rounds perfectly, kinda like the school desks we had when were kids, with the multi layers. I'm using a NEC 21'' monitor to keep it simple and for the CP, 2 ball top T-Stick pluses with 7 button each and a 3" Happ translucent track ball in the center kinda like Thejohn's Centipide cabinet and a Happs coin door for the credits. I sent Frosty my artwork I drew up, he's a hell of a guy, and he's putting it all to the computer so I can have it printed, ROBO MAME hahah. The  Building and wiring the cabinet should be no biggie, I've built most the stuff in my house, just finished a huge media wall in my basement "theater". What I'll need help with, and I might PM you fellow Illiniosians is with configuring of my computer to run MAME. You see, I'm doing this backwards, where most people having been playing with MAME on thier home computer and then decide to build a cabinet, I have never played MAME as of yet. Pretty stupid, huh? I can't help it but I love to build stuff. It all started with looking for a used Galaga cabinet on ebay. Hope you guys don't mind be buggin you a little in the future, Thanks in advance and you gotta love this board!!
