what games could be played with this analog joystick?
« on: January 28, 2004, 03:05:09 am »
Here is a joystick i have and am wondering if anyone has ever hooked up one of these and what games it would be good for. I just won it off ebay as it said it was an analog joystick.   Not sure if i should have bought it or not, but i got a good price on it. REAL good price lol, so i figured it might be worth a try to see what i can do with it.

I will attach a couple pics to show.

Until i get it, i will have no idea if i can use it or not lol.
My thought was to add it to my custom built panel, but i wasn't sure what you even need to hook up an analog stick.  Nows as good as time as any to learn i suppose lol.  Wish i had an idea what game might have used this, just out of curiosity. Kinda looked like one of the sticks i saw on happs quite a while back.

I saw a similar stick on E-bay from a Space Lords game, but this could have been from any number of games.

As far as what to use it for, Afterburner and Afterburner II come immediately to mind.  There were also many other flight games that used analog sticks, also, if you're not a stickler for accuracy, it will be a good choice for Star Wars or 270-degree driving games.  It will work as a trigger stick for Tron or Zaxxon, but you're relying on MAME's analog-to-digital software conversion, which works fairly well for these games.

As far as interfacing it, it will have 2 pots on it (I hope) similar to a Star Wars yoke, so I can think of three options -

to the gameport - (might need to swap the pots from 5K to 100K), see http://www.gunpowder.freeserve.co.uk/wheels/wiring.htm

USB - see http://1uparcade.com/projects-dualstrike.html

or

USB - daveb (BYOAC member) is building an analog controls encoder, but I don't think it's out yet.  There was a thread on it within the last month.

Quick notes on the Davids analog controller...  Unless you already have everything... you will want to wait.

It will be MUCH cheaper then replacing the pots (unless someone has found a good source of 100k pots that fit... last I looked they where 25 bucks EACH).

Its a DREAM to setup.  I love screw terminals.

It handles 5 axis... Not that most will need it... but you never know when you decide to setup a starwars yoke with gas and break...

Its plug-n-play... and works with 100k pots AND 5k pots... and should work with any weird ones in the middle.

And always try to get some lovin' to the guys in the community...  (your definition of lovin' should be in an appropriate fassion... please...)

I'm not sure about the 'official' release date.  But it is coming...  And I'm guessing sooner then later...

That's great!  I've seen a few on Ebay in the past go for cheap (some with strange name).  I've kicked myself twice for oversleeping and missing out.

Here are some other games to play with it:

I, Robot
Food Fight
Thunderblade
Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters (2 player)
Road Runner

Assuming that they are 5k pots, 1UP's MS Sidewinder Dual Strike hack should be an immediate, inexpensive way to get it up and running.

And dont forget..

pc games as well!

There are some pretty nice flight combat games are are really great.

Mach3 (if I ever find the mpg file for the special mame version) would be fun also.

I'm still new at all of this so bare with me. THe list of games above, could those be played with say a newer microsoft flight stick?

Just wondering?

I believe the answer is yes.  Pretty much any PC analog joystick would work, although you may have to use Analog+ MAME in some cases if it uses extra throttles, pedals, and the like.

Also,  I remember hearing something like you might have to switch out some pots on the arcade joystick or use the MS dual strick hack.  I beleive this is needed because there is a difference in resistance, between a standard arcade analog joystick and a standard PC analog joystick.

Good Luck with that project.

I have some detailed pictures of a USB Dual Strike hack wiring which shows the actually PCB board with the wires on my website.  Seems like you have more buttons on that joystick so you will need to utilize more buttons from a Dual Strike (if you hack one that is ...)

Here is my Dual Strike pics of my website:
