Need help with tools needed to replace coin insert
« on: May 25, 2017, 11:20:03 pm »
Hi everyone,

I am trying to replace the coin insert in my coin mech. The one side (red) was easy because I could get the screws that held the release mechanism.

I'm running into an obstacle replacing the other side (yellow), as I believe I have to remove the full red side mechanism to get to it. The problem is that I don't know what kind of tool I can use to unscrew the nuts inbetween the two mechanisms.

The socket size is 3/16, but the ones that I've bought to-date have far too wide walls to grip the screw as it hits the other mechanism. Is there a specific type of tool/socket driver (precision?) that can be used to disassemble this thing? Attached is a picture for reference.

Other possible solutions are 3/16" nut driver or a pair of needle nose pliers might work.

Yeah nut runner/driver is what you want for that.

I have a 3/16 nut driver in my tool kit that is ground down to a fine profile for these screws. they are a PITA without one. you aren't torquing on it anyways.

I think just because the small amount of space between the wall of the mech and the screw, I'm going to have to ground the walls of the socket unless there is an already "thin walled" 3/16 socket available for purchase? How do you ground down the walls?

Thanks for everyone's help/suggestions

I just took my nut driver to a bench grinder and rotated it around to take a bit off the outsides.

I basically only ever use this nut driver on these screws and the threaded fasteners on the sides of D-Sub connectors. (like serial ports and VGA connections) They are small screws so you don't need to wrench them down hard so thinning out the driver is fine.

You need something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Dynamite-Metric-Nut-Driver-Assortment/dp/B000BQ4XPQ/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_3?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B000BQ4XPQ&pd_rd_r=0EM7DMRRCP14Y79P15RD&pd_rd_w=B6I0q&pd_rd_wg=xyArm&psc=1&refRID=0EM7DMRRCP14Y79P15RD

I used an old computer kit that I had laying around that had the nut driver that was used to put the metal standoffs for motherboards onto a case.  It also has a nut driver for removing the small screws on the VGA connector on video cards.
