External hard drive, sata to USB adapter issues
« on: May 19, 2017, 11:40:44 am »
Hello all,

I don't know if this is the right area  for this question. I didn't find a hard ware part of the forum. Any way..

I have a 3T external hard drive from sea gate and I believe the sata/USB adapter is cheaply made and does not function any more. Do any of you know what to test with the multi meter to find if this is true? And if I am right is there a reliable case I can substitute or should I just stick with anker's sata/usb adapter?

Thanks

Does your adapter have to usb connectors coming off of it? If so are you plugging both ub plugs in for adequate power? If not get one with 2 usb connectors. Half the time one usb isn't enough power in my testing.

I believe it's this micro usb type B nonsense. Is there a dual adapter for that?

What is the warranty of this drive?  3TB drive with faulty connections is a scary situation.  I would return it to Seagate.  I never buy Seagate as their drives run very hot unless this a 3rd party enclosure, which I would seek a replacement.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Unfortunately it is out of warranty. That is why I'm looking for an alternative route.

Shipping something from the U.S. to Canada for repair/exchange?  Please use USPS to avoid (additional?/excessive?) shipping charges.  PM me if you have any questions.

Actually - IIRC the Seagate 3tb case uses an external ac power supply and does not get the power via USB - are you using the AC adapter that came with the unit or a generic one ?

Is this the drive ?

Ok i thought we were just talking about using a regular sata drive with a usb adapert, not the whole external hard drive

I was thinking it was something like this

You are correct, the connectors look like this.

USB 3.0 with a 9-12v external brick.
I had three of these fail (WD) so I bought a hdd dock instead, same company, good rep.  You can use notebook drives with it too.

If you only have the one drive:

Assuming it's SATA, yeah, just buy a new external hard drive case and crack open the old Seagate enclosure (it's OK if you break it open, since you will not be re-using it, sometimes the clips snap off and break).

I saved my sister's data the same way.  It would not recognize the drive and she thought it was dead.  I bought a new enclosure popped it in there and her data remained intact.

It looks like the new enclosure the guys recommend above is USB 3.0 as well which should speed things up.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I believe I'll go with orico hub. I found a dual for $20.

I did crack the case open and used the multimeter on the sata to usb board and I'm pretty sure it's the culprit.
