Kilz Premium (water based primer) with oil based paint?
« on: May 13, 2017, 11:01:55 pm »
Hey all,

Long time lurker here.  I am building a Chance Flynn style cab and I am just about ready to paint. I have Kilz Premium water based primer and Rustoleum satin black for the paint.  My question is it ok to use water based primer with oil based paint?  My cab is built from plywood.

I was always told that the primers and paint base should match.  That said I have always heard the oil base is more durable so I always favor oil base.  I however don't have any experience with mixing latex primer and oil base paint so I can't really say.

Well I had similar thoughts so I went and got some Kilz original oil based primer.  First coat is on, gonna sand it later.

Thanks

some say keep oil and oil together and water and water together, but with lots of primers you can put water paint over the oil primer. the can will tell you if it's compatible.

oil is a tough paint, it takes forever to fully dry though so watch out for that. (like literally give it a week)

It is fine, so long as the latex primer is fully dry.  I did the same combo as you on a mini-pac style bartop many years ago, and it still looks like the day I painted it.  I used Kilz water based, and Rustoleum gloss red.  No problems.

If your cab is made of MDF, you'll want an oil based primer anyway. The mdf take it much better. You can use oil primer under latex paint, you cannot use oil primer over latex paint.

Yes... most primers are universal now... it should be no big deal.

My cab is MDF.  Again, no problems.  MDF sucks liquid like a sponge, oil or water.

I've built two cabs, both mdf, one used a latex primer and one used an oil based primer, the oil based primer allowed for less coats of the latex paint and went on smoother.

My response said nothing about which one works, my response did say which one works better;)

I don't know about the oil based version, but the Kilz Latex Sealing Primer is thick like marshmallow fluff.  I don't think I used more than one coat of that stuff, and it sands nicely.  Thinner stuff might be different.
