fancy illuminated buttons
« on: January 27, 2004, 01:32:07 am »
In my continued quest to explore various unrealistic options for my very first cab design...I ran across these "Luminescent Pushbuttons" at Wico. I think they look slick (especially with the transparent colored washer), but I have no idea if they would be useful or not. (read: could I take advantage of their abilities, not having any real electrical knowledge.)

They don't have any info other than that they are "new".
Any guess as to what the "Special illumination effects" might be and how they would be triggered?  Could Mame possibly interact with these buttons to change lighting schemes on a per game basis. Could they work as "uber-cool" player1/player2 start buttons?

I think I've read for some games mame will use the numlock and other keyboard LEDs for certain things.  Like Spy Hunter.  You could probably rig them up that way.

Outrun will flash the start button when you have inserted a coin. Mame emulates this by flashing the NumLock LED. You could hook this up to the illuminated start button. I have seen several sources for people who create driver schematics for driving powerful LED's from an i-PAC.

I don't have a complete list, but it's more than just OutRun,

PacMan (and clones variants), and most of the older Atari Vector games - Battlezone, Asteroids, Astdelux, etc.

Does SpyHunter flash the VAN button (or scroll/caps lock)when the weapons van is coming?

I called Wico today to get more specs on these buttons and even they didn't have a clue what they can do. The sales dude is suppose to call me back, but since I accidentally mentioned I may only buy 2 buttons, I doubt I'll be hearing from him.

I may have to bug him again tomorrow.

They probably won't call back anyway. I install residential and commercial garage door and gate operators for a large company and alot of the parts I need can be found at Wico. I've e-mailed and called them many times for a catalog and they never sent one and never reply to e-mails. They did ask me if this is for myself or for a company and I told him that I was told by our purchasing agent to call and request a catalog because we are looking for another supplier for microswitches, buttons and other componants so its not like I was some kid wanting to order just one thing. After taking down some info and the company shipping address they said that they would send one out but never did. This happened twice. All e-mails were never replied to at all. They have "HANDS DOWN" the WORSE sales dept I've ever delt with. They are however VERY good at turning customers away. Don't waste your time with them. Call a company that wants your business ie. Happ Controls or Betson Imperial. They will most likely have what your looking for too.
