Correct size of holes to drill for wood screws in MDF?
« on: January 26, 2004, 02:06:23 pm »
What is the correct size of holes to drill into MDF?  I have some things glued together and am now ready to sturdy them up...  ;D  I the pieces are all 3/4" MDF and I plan on using some #6 and #8 screws, any help appreciated.  I am a total newbie on working with wood, but having alot of fun!  Thanks...

I don't know if there is an exact size, but here's what I do (note: I am a total novice too, but this works for me):

Compare your drill bits to the screw in hand - pick the bit which is slightly smaller than the main body of the screw (ie not inc. thread).  Have a couple of practices on some scrap wood if you are in any doubt.  If you use a bit too small, the screw can be very hard to drive in.  Of course a bit too big could comprimise the holding of the screw.

Yea giving it a try on a bit of scrap is probably the best way to do it...  would hate to mess something up at this point!   :'(

Hard to believe that you are a newbie too Minwah!  I guess you have mostly just messed with the software end of MAME up until now then...  MAMEWAH is the best front end, thanks for all your great work on it!  :)

Yeah I kept 'designing' (aka putting off) building my cab for months (ok years), lol!  Never been much of a carpenter...have a look at my cab as it stands, all the woodwork just about done - looking forward to getting final painting out the way so I can get to the fun stuff (electrics & control panels)  ;D
