Cabinet in garage in New England for the summer?
« on: April 05, 2017, 08:32:10 am »
I'm working on finishing up a cabinet project.  As of right now, it's in our finished basement.  However, in the summer we are **NEVER** in the basement, as we have an in-ground pool and patio and everyone is always in that area.  Our garage is attached to the pool area and sees a ton of traffic in the summer.  Almost all day the garage door and the back door of the garage are wide open all summer except for nights, as that's generally how people enter/exit the pool area.

I was thinking of pulling the cabinet up into the garage for the late spring / summer / early fall months when the pool is in use.  I am, however, concerned with the humidity affecting the cabinet, specifically the wood which is particle board.

Any thoughts on the amount of risk doing this?

I'm in Massachusetts and I have 2 cabinets in my unfinished basement which gets pretty humid in the summer. So far they have been fine. The particle board that arcade cabs are made from is of a better quality than something you would get from say Ikea. That being said for me its about sealing the surfaces well. The outside of my cabinets have laminate, the edges have t-molding and the inside is painted with a heavy coat of black paint. They have been down there for years without any issues I can see. although I do run a small dehumidifier its still humid down there. If you have the garage door open most of the time I think you would be fine. But I would suggest sealing as many of the surfaces as possible.

It really about porousness. For instance I have one small area with drywall on the ceiling in my basement. The only spot that gets a little bit of mold/mildew are a couple spots that they missed when they were painting... by they I mean the people that owned the house before me.

At any given time I have multiple cabinets stored under my rear carport, which has a roof but no sides, the average cabinet tends to sit out there 6 months, but going a year or more isn't all that unlikely either.

The only humidity issue I have ever had is leaving back doors off cabinets and having them not want to fit later on.

OK, sounds like I don't have to worry that much.  Thanks.
