Player 1 on the left or right?

Was thinking about my set-up and for some reason, i always seem to prefer playing with the right-hand controls and wondered what other people preferred.

I think you're overthinking it.

Some of the old single player games had buttons on both left and right. For a two player, the standard would be buttons on right. But hey, if it's your machine do what you like. Home field advantage. Everyone will always ask why your buttons are on the wrong side though.

If you are talking about whether the player one is on the right or left period.... I'd say left nearly always. But again, if it's your machine do what you want. Be prepared for the confusion though.

The only exceptions I can remember every seeing to player one on the left if with some old black and white games, which had it reversed for whatever reason.

Now a lot of people might be used to almost always playing on the player 2 spot because that is what smart guys used to do whenever possible, since the right side controls were always in better shape than the left side ones.

What you need to do is design an elaborate switching mechanism. Moving the lever will mechanically swap the wiring for the P1 and P2 controllers. That way you won't have to settle on one or the other.

Two dedicated PC to handle the logic. One per joystick.  :lol

Assuming the OP is about a 2P cabinet with identical controllers (like joystick on the left and buttons on the right) I usually play from the left side, since playing P2 on the right puts me on a more offset position. The 1p position is closer to the center of the monitor.

Track & field / Hyper olympic coctail has the 1P on the right side...
