Mini Afterburner Cabinet
« on: March 09, 2017, 11:54:04 am »
Another Raspberry Pi project I made as a present for a pilot buddy of mine (we know they all secretly want to be Maverick afterall!  8) )

Features:
- Raspberry Pi 3
- RetroPie with customised AttractMode Menus
- Speakers, 3W amp with dial potentiometer for volume
- Flight stick with throttle (off eBay)
- 7inch 4:3 screen which runs on 5V
- Cabinet made form chipboard, Plexiglass and T-Moulding
- Grab handle
- 5v LEDs strip
- Entire thing runs on a small 5V 3A PSU
- Graceful shutdown switch and Powerblock circuit.
- Side art, Marquee and Bezel all printed on vinyl using my inkjet printer.

Emulators:

Mame/AdvanceMAme
Flights roms including Afterburner, GLOC and many other analog games and top down shooters

N64
All flight and space shooters (e.g. pilotwings64, Aerofighters assault, Shadows of the Empire etc)

Playstation
Ace Combat 3, Colony Wars 2

DosBox

X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Aces Over the Pacific and Aces over Europe.

What I love most
I can't believe how happy I am with the way the original Tie Fighter CD rom runs under drop box. Even got all controls mapped to the Flightstick (with creative use of hotkeys). For those that were familier with the game that was some achievement!

What my 2 year old loves most
Afterburner, Pod Racer and blowing sh!t up on Nuclear Strike 64

Why is there an x wing sticker in the Afterburner cab? It breaks the theme.

Gosh you're right. Ruined it, and I feel embarased giving it to him now.  ;)

Joking aside, I'm no perfectionist and I was just looking for something to cover up the tacky joystick brand. The machine is meant as a nice nostalgic gift to hark back to our child hoods. Arcades and Starwars was a big part of that. Also the machine runs the X-Wing PC game really well so it's a wink to that too. If my son had got his way, there would be Peppa Pig and Thomas the tank engine all over it too. ::)

I should have prefaced my comment by saying that I like the build. It just seems a little strange to take the theme 98 percent to completion. Surely there is some Afterburnery thing you could put there.

Aesthetically, the joystick seems a bit out of proportion to the rest of machine, but that's really the only thing I think is a negative. It's actually a pretty sweet little build. Good job to you!

Nice build  :applaud:

Is there any support for CHD games in Retropie yet? M.A.C.H 3 would be a must on this cabinet if so.

Second, a cabinet like this (After Burner) demands a functionality as provided by Mamehooker in order to get the warning and lock on lights flashing, but I haven't seen anything for the RPi's yet.

I don't know if this would help with the last bit:

Would be interesting to find out.

What flight controller is that? Does t have force feedback? If so does it work with the mame games?
