I have an arcade machine and i want to add an external hdd light to the control panel of the cabinet. Would i just buy a red led and splice it from the motherboard or is there an easier way?

Just to ask...
Why??
But to answer your q you can just splice into the PC's HDD LED and connect it in parallel or you can just extend the existing one if you can pull it out.

I too would like to know the reasoning why.
Not sure if your Mame setup is in a cased PC or not. If so just remove the existing one and extend it. Or just buy or make something like

I like to see the activity of the hard drive
That is the only reason.

Nice, well how about a clear hard drive case so you can see it working?
Damn, that would be kinda cool.
