Yeah.  It's somewhere in the options you access by right clicking with the mouse while Mala is running.  (Don't have access at the moment to tell you exactly where, it's just a checkbox).  Layout name must be exactly the same as the name you gave the emulator/system.  The background artwork might also need to have the same name and be in a folder of the same name if I recall correctly.

There is also the option to have it change based on game list.

Any chance of having a look as i cant seem to work it out.

New issue with this new mame build..in Mala it opens the rom.in a second window and not in the main window which means I have to click on the second window to play a game. Again is there a setting I am missing as this did not happen in my old version

Look into trees. I think you have to do this with a MaLa tree setup. That's how mine is done. YouTube has examples but figuring it all out is a bit arduous
Malafe.net has explanation of setting up trees.  Just heads up you can't save your own tree with its own name Just edit the default tree.

Doesn't have to be done with trees.
I've never used Mala tree.
I had a different layout for each emulator on my last setup and I have a different layout for each gamelist on my current setup.
All it requires is that the box be checked and the files named correctly.

Kind of fixed. All emulators switch layouts as i wanted except the mame one, that always defaults to the standard layout. Any ideas

Ok last issue as i have fixed Emulator issue.

I have Mala set to startup when pc boots. When it loads I have to click on the screen with the mouse before the joystick works. Any ideas. Only was I have found to get around it was to have Mala load directly into the last rom played but was trying to avoid it

Something is loading after Mala and taking the focus in windows away from it.

Search the forums for "Mala focus".

On my own setup none of those solutions worked because I had sound card software that still loaded so late it would take the focus away.  What finally worked for me was unchecking the option in Mala to start with windows and instead create a shortcut to Mala and place it in the windows startup folder.  It was enough to make Mala be the last thing to load (at least until I decided to include Steam games)

If you have other programs on delayed start, antivirus or other programs that automatically update, they could still steal focus.  This is why some people prefer to disable networking and uninstall anything not needed for the emulators.

I have Steam on my current cab and a lot of the time a steam update steals focus from Mala.

Thanks
I have unchecked mala to start in Windows, also placed mala in startup folder. I have gone into Msconfig and modified start up etc. Well at least I am on the right track. Will continue. I have a feeling I may have sound card issues too.
Thanks heaps
