Quasicade Cluster****
« on: January 24, 2017, 03:37:36 pm »
Wandered upon this Craigslist ad for a Quasicade CP. I vaguely remember Quasicon arcades from years past, think they're out of business now.

http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/vgm/5953500295.html

I didn't realize (or had forgot) what a cluster ---fudgesicle--- some of these were.

Anyone ever seen one of these CP's in person or tried to play on one? So much ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I don't even see where you can rest your hand.

You generally don't rest your hands anywhere while playing most arcade games, they generally float.

It by itself explains why it is stupid to try to play 3D era games on arcade controls. To actually support the games you end up with that, and that is a far worse experience than just using the gamepad in the first place. Arcade controls are supposed to be an upgrade, not something that makes the games actively harder to control.

WOW! I wouldnt know what to do with a CP like that....

So many sticks, such large quantities of buttons....

I only want to play Galaga :p

Yeah I think Cluster ---fudgesicle--- sums it up well.

For whatever reason, a batch of stained wood cabinets with those control panels showed up in Texas and were being flogged on Groupon IIRC.  I laid hands on a cabinet made with a similar control panel, (think it had an Xbox 360 in it) and it actually worked better than I anticipated but I didn't use it more than a minute or two.

I think the guy also works up controls for people with various physical disabilities.  Personally, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some of analog sticks he was using.

I still rest my wrists partially on a CP when waiting for an up upcoming level or on my button hand.

Probably wouldn't be as shocking if it wasn't something mass produced.

Not entirely sure which buttons go with what controls... and the double analogs seem like they'd be a pain as you couldn't use your thumbs like you would with a controller, do you use your index finger?  :dizzy:

Curious if any fellow byoac'ers have actually tried this setup or seen one in the wild.

Interesting, yeah the fact that it was mass produced makes me believe the layout/controls worked at least partially for people. Or the buyers were people with more money than sense and hey 'mo buttons mo better'.

More money than sense I would guess.

But ime the same, tend to rest my wrists on the cp and move sticks with finger tips.

Ahhh yes, the "Ultimate Mancave" guy and the stash of inventory he's been sitting on for 12 years. Did his cab with the crotch ticklers ever take off?

good day.

Wow! I would stroke out trying to explain to my 9 year old what button does what.  I ordered a LED-WIZ recently because I got tired of having to explain the controls everytime someone played on my 6 button layout. Lol

Yeah, those, "what does each button do?" people always irritate me.  Why don't they just press them and see what happens?

On my old layout I used to make it idiot proof. If you loaded up galaga then every stick on the panel could control it and every button on the thing was fire.

If you played Final Fight then the six buttons would be like this.

Punch - Jump - Punch
Jump - Punch - Jump

And so on.

Good idea. That's basically what they did with Sonic. Every button was jump.
