old skill tester crane
« on: January 12, 2017, 12:09:58 am »
Hi all, picked up this old crane skill tester,no idea of brand or model, pretty old looking at the electrics inside, when powered up the crane drives to the home position, the coin acceptor has no wires connected and there is a loom with 4 bare wires just hanging down in the cabinet you can see that 2 more wires in the white plug have been  cut of flush for some reason. the red wire appears to have about 20V going by my multi meter.
Any ideas on how i connect this to the coin acceptor? the coin acceptor has a smal socket for a plug with 4 wires, ( i dont think it is the original acceptor as there were a number of old ones lying in the bottom of the cabinet.
I am hoping that this is all that it needs.
Could i bridge 2 wires together to see if it starts?

I attach photos for reference

boy someone's really had a go a that one...all kinds of kludges and hacks going on there. I've never seen one like this.

that acceptor should accept up to about 30 volts i belive.

did this come with any kind of manual or schematic? if not, It might be hard to figure out.

alternativly, you could replace the board with maybe something like so that another guy did here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,152606.0.html

not sure where he sourced the boards from.

Thanks for the reply, no i dont have a schematic or manual for it.
since i posted to this forum i found a label on the back of the cabinet and it is a LAI machine (Leisure and allied industries) which i believe are quite common.
A circuit diagram would definitely help.
after googling for a bit i have got a feeling that there is meant to be a credit board between the unused loom and coin acceptor, not sure if one of those small boards in the last photo is a credit board, all those bits apart from the newer coin acceptor were lying in the bottom of the cabinet.

I would have thought that being so common someone would have a manual / electrical drawing, heres hoping.
Cheers

because it seems to me u can match your machine (name up) and either d/l the nessary stuff
and or request it via phone
because as shawn pointed out to u
it is a rats nest in there

When you say its a rats nest in there are you referring to the one loom that is not connected?
i cannot see any other wires that are not connected just the one loom as shown in the pic that has had wires cut.
Am i missing something else?

Thanks

its called that not only because of 1 or 2 plugs but if u look at the controller board it has a add on that is not clealry factory built
just makes it that much more harder

oh yes, i see what you mean, i thought that small board on the right side did not look original.
the speed control mounted left of board does not look original either, however it does work, i moved the strap wrapped around it upwards and it slowed it down, move it down and it sped it up.

I hear what your saying, i see in Autralia there is a company Sunrise micro solutions that sells all in 1 boards that replace the original set up and have more features however they cost about $400AUD, didnt really want to spend that much on such an old machine, was hoping to maybe just get a credit board for $20 or $30 and some info on wiring it.
I have emailed LAI requesting a manual, hopefully they can help.
Thanks for your advice though.
This is my second machine i have bought, the first one i converted jaws and fitted acrylic tank so it could pick up full cans of cold beer, google VB skill tester and and you will find several links to video.
Cheers

could you take a picture of just inside the coin door. there should be some kind of wiring there for a switch or something.

As ugly as it is in there, it sounds like it mostly works. if you can coin it up and play a game, you're laughing.

that electronic mechanism you have there is pretty easy to wire up if we can figure out what you have going on in there.

Thanks Shawn for the positive response,
here is a pic inside the door, i removed the coin acceptor, it is the newish looking one in the photo of the bits on my bench.
the cable shown in this picture was not originally in this position, it was laying in the bottom of the cab, i hung it there assuming it was for coin acceptor however now i think may have to have a credit board inbetwren acceptor and loom.
There is no other unused wires that can be seen.
Should it also have a credit display? i cant see any where on the cab where one would go, i think some had them behind the front glass.

The fact that it drives to home position gives me some hope that it may not be too much needed to get it going.

Any advice is appreciated
Cheers
Mark

I bridged the red wire with 1 of the yellow wires that are hanging out the end of the white plug and it allowed me to start the game however it needed to be continuously bridged not momentarily.
Now i have found a second issue, the claw motor does not stop when lowering, when string goes loose and spring loaded arm activates micri switch it does not stop it continues to run until all string is wound off then it rewinds it on drum in opposite direction.
I have checked micro switch with multimeter and it is working fine, i checked 2 wires for continuity back to the PCB and they are ok too.
Any ideas what to look at next?
