25 inch Makvision, clicking sound. San Francisco
« on: January 03, 2017, 01:49:02 pm »
I picked up a San Fransisco Rush cab.  The game works blind (meaning that I can hear sound and the controls work) but the video is out.  I just hear a clicking sound from the monitor.  Where would be the best resource to diag this thing.  I could put in a cap kit but I am unsure that's the issue.

Its a Makvision 25 inch aftermarket chassis, not the original.

clicking is good... means the SMPS is working. it's going into overload protection and continuously restarting itself.

can you tell if this monitor has ever been serviced? like do the caps still look like they have glue holding them down like from the factory, or have they been replaced already? do you know any of it's history?

are any of the capacitor tops popped out? they will certainly need replacing if they are.

usually all that needs to be replaced is the caps, but if you bought it not working you can pretty much assume it could be anything at this point.

2nd most common failure next to the capacitors is IC8 which is a vertical deflection IC. they don't put enough heatsink grease on them or properly tighten the hold down screw and they over heat. you can usualy tell if this has happened because the resistor (R113) that feeds power into the chip is blown/overheated/out of spec and the color stripes are all black. this should be a 1 ohm 2 watt resistor in almost the dead middle of the board where the deflection yoke plugs in. (IIRC)

next is usually the HOT then the supporting mystery IC's sticking out of the board. (one auto switches the frequency between 15/25/31k and the other does some sync stuff.) since you are clicking i doubt these are your issue. you should check the HOT and make sure it's got good heatsinking and is screwed down good as well. I've found these loose as well.
