unfortunately I tried mamehooker and wasn't able to detect any output with all the roms I tried
I think outputs were messed up/deleted in MAME for some recent versions.
Pretty sure there's a thread about it in the software subforum.
You might try a version around the 150's, or see what version charlieram is using.
EDIT: Also keep in mind that MAME is made up of a bunch of different parts, meant to emulate different arcade hardware, written by a lot of different people.
Some games have the outputs emulated, some (most?) do not.
