New England locals?
« on: January 21, 2004, 08:54:52 pm »
Folks,
On an unrelated thread a couple members and I happened upon the fact that we all hail from frosty New England (Go Pats!).

One guy mentions the idea of a cab builders get together, next thing you know.. this post.

How many New Englanders might be into this?

Providence, RI myself, and quit saying that or the Texas guys will start in on us. Speaking myself, I'm sick of people measuring their lakes by how many Rhode Islands can fit in them :)

Can I come? ;D  I haven't built my cab yet, but I'm going to...  Oh how I love the government for holding on to my money for me. :P

Oh yea, what the heck would we do?  Granted, we'd talk about arcade games and such, but don't we do that just fine here?

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em

And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again

Brattleboro, VT.  Heck, I'm the one who suggested getting together.

New England is big, but it's not _that_ big.  I think we're mostly ~two hours away from each other.  Ish.

Peale speaks the truth, his concept.

I didn't mention you by name in the orginal post in case you thought my suggestion of making thread was hare brained.

Anyone want to suggest a central meeting place. Say like Dave and Busters in Providence?

I would be happy to host a shin-dig at my place in North Providence once my cab is ready in a few weeks. Who better to torture test it?

Just suggestions mind you. Like Peale said, we're not all that far away.

Don't be a F O O L.  There is only one place to have a get together in NE, and that place is FunSpot.

I'm in Lowell, MA (near New Hampshire) and I'm up for a drive if necessary.
My Girlfriend is tired of me blabbing at her about Mame cabinets, so I need to get it out of my system somehow!  ;D

WOOO HAH !!!!!

Just what I have been looking for ...

I literally just found out about mame 1 week before Christmas  in a post on a Home Theater site..... www.avsforum.com

I just finished my HT in Nov. So I was searching  for ideas to finish the retro lobby and came across a post about  M.A.M.E.

After doing some searching online about where to begin. I decided on making my own cab using a video game monitor. Well then of course I found out about jamma boards.

Well to make a long story short...Since January 3 .I have bought 3 video games, 2 extra jamma boards, 8 marquees (I only wanted 1 out of the 8 in the auction), a manual fo Teenage Mutant..) and a control panel for a williams Hit the Ice. My Hit the Ice is in a 2  player cab soon to be in a 4 player cab. This weekend I will be picking up another game so I can make that into a mame machine. I also might have a chance to  get a Blasteroids gamthis weekend as well.e

I vote For Fun Spot. 2nd floor back building RETRO Games...
FUN SPOT is  only 5 minutes away from my summer cottage in Laconia. Hey we can have a party at my cottage in the summer if you guys help me out with all this mame stuff.

Sorry to be so long winded but I am excited...  it's nice to finally meet some New Englanders who know about mame.

Signed
ED O'Neill
BTW I am in MEthuen...last city in MA on 93

I think we need some time to get a better census of New England members but it would seem to me to keep folks happy we should at some point post a poll as to a location.

FunSpot looks tremendous but in terms of getting the whole gang together I think we need to think logistically. Could some folks that are interested come up with some meeting friendly (beer and/or food on tap - sue me) locations?

No denying it would be a good time to put some faces on nicknames, hang out with some like minded folk and potentially enjoy some apps and cold beverages.

Sweet! I hear Funspot is the place to be if you're looking for a good arcade time!

With that being said, I've never actually been there, but any arcade doesn't seem like a place to 'hang out' with people you just met. You can't really talk to people becuase you're too busy blowing up demons or getting to the finish line intact. Just my humble opinion.

I will certainly be up for meeting any place, but my vote is for Dave and Busters in Providence, or some place like Jillian's in Boston.. They have a little of everything: good eats, good looking women, arcades, pool.  Either that, or a cool sit-down-and-eat-but-with-a-cool-ambiance kind of place like Fire and Ice in Boston. I know they have some in other towns though, so we can look into that.

As an aside, do any of you people smoke cigars?  I'm interested in getting a decent smoking group going where we can just 'chill', smoke, and be cool like it was meant to be.

/Steve

I'm in Dracut, MA (between Methuen and Lowell)

I've lurked on these boards for over a year.  I finally started to build a bartop cab yesterday.

The ultimate would be to physically see people's machines but I know there is no way that could happen.

I haven't been to funspot but I have been to jillians (and it has a little of everything).

Finspot looks VERY cool but in terms of geographic fairness I think Providence or Beantown would be more centralized.

I miss living in NH....Holds out donation cup for get me out of FL fund........

Funspot is awsome. I still remember going there the summer the first mortal kombat game came out and seeing it..... oh my god he ripped his head right off...

was sad when the state made them make the "skill push games" give tickets instead of tokens.

And summers in the arcades on hampton beach.

I WANNA GO HOME!!!!!!!! sniff sniff  :'(

Techoverload ,

Where did you live in NH,  and I hope you weren't just playing in the arcades at hampton ,when that's where the best looking girls hung out.

We used to drive there from Medford MA (7 miles north of Boston) just to try to meet chicks. We did play some game but mostly chased the girls or drove up and down the strip.

Hey how about ages and other tidbits:

I'm 34 married with a 6 yr old son, I jet ski, and and collect things...hot sauces,gumball/peanut machines and other coin -operated things.

I am married 32, 1 girl 7yr's

And yes we cruised the strip more then playing games....used to ride a motorcycle (before I was married) made picking up the grls Oooo so easy  8) . But the arcades were cool also. We used to go down to the boardwalk at Salisbury in the winter as a couple of the arcades there used to stay open year round...... Good Times.........

I am from the dover, rochester, portsmouth area. And spent time in the summer at weirs beach.... had several diffrent friends that had family owned summer cabins up there.

God I have to stop talking about it........ I am soooooo home sick.......

Anyone up there want a room-mate....and wife and kid  :-\

I tell you what I moved down here thinking wow Florida beaches everywhere........ but its sad there isnt a real arcade or even a boardwalk anywhere..... just high rise condos and a occasional small cut in area for public access to the beach....... most of the time you cant even see the water from the road.......

But alas... no snow down here... though I even miss that to some degree

I'm a 30 year old Writer/Artist/Graphic Designer, with the same level of maturity I've had since the age of 16. No kids, but I live with my girlfriend of 12 years (Been seeing each other since High School). I moved to the Boston Area from Detroit during the Dot-com days but stayed for the beautiful (Northern) New England landscape. I moved to Lowell recently since living costs in Boston are absolutely INSANE.

In the summer you'll find me in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, Kayaking/Hiking/camping, or hiking on Katahdin in Maine. In the winter you'll find me in Vermont (Skiing Killington) or stuck at home avoiding the FRIGID weather.

My hobbies are: Watching films, collecting music and comics, reading books, playing video games and complaining about things I'm too lazy to do anything about.

I have brown hair, brown eyes, I'm a Gemini and I love long walks on the beach, especially if there is an arcade at the end.   ;)

(p.s. that last bit was just me being sarcastic)

I copied and pasted this question from your other post:

Question:
"I'm building a custom cab and I'd like to try to get a decent arcade monitor and possibly an over/under coin door from an old junk cab...any places around the New England area I could start looking?"

Hmm, I get the feeling like I'm the odd man out on this one.. I've never actually been to Funspot :( Since I could drive, whenever I wasn't working or in school I was geeking out at home or at a friend's house either taking something apart or putting it back together. Sometimes the occasional computer game frenzy would pop up, like StarCraft, Diablo, EQ, StarWars and that would completely consume my life for a short while until I got bored.

Other than that, I'm 27, no kids (but my girlfriend has 2 (5&7) - that's good enough for me!) I live in Saugus, MA (a couple miles  north of Boston). I live with my roommate who, incidentally, is not going to be too happy when he realizes the size of the arcade I'm building :)

I like camping and hiking (year round! In fact, I just got back from a weekend up at Mount Kinsman!), snowboarding (I'm learning.... slowly...and painfully), electronics (including computers) and other cool gadgets.  I own a motorcycle. I love riding it, but I'm looking to sell it. :(It's too nice of a bike to keep storing it outside where it's going to end up rusted. Anyone looking to buy a sweet looking Honda VT1100 cruiser? :)

I post random pictures of myself on hotornot.com to illicet feedback from random internet people. I play Risk, Axis and Allies and a homebrew dice-game called Lamps. I smoke cigars and play poker.  I have a dry sense of humor, but sometimes let out a wet one (eeewwwww).

  Uh, I think that's it.

/Steve

P.S. Oh, and I like Dockside's nachos (with buffalo chicken!)

I work in Hartford and live in Willimantic YOUR heroin capital in New England...

Sounds like we have competing priorities the need to drink beer (ala dave and busters) and to play classic games...  There's a dave and busters in the providence place mall, fwiw.

I haven't been to jillians (beantown) in ages, how is their classic game selection?

where's this funspot you speak of (EDIT never mind clicked on the link) ? Maybe we could carpool or something...  Is there anything more centrally located that is fun spot esque anything in springfield for example?   Milford Amusement center is way at the bottom of connecticut (we got the fun, we got it... and q-zar too!) which is probably way too far for most people...

How about a poll? We call it the "Where the heck do we meet, drink beer and play video games poll.

So far it seems Dave and Busters (Providence) Jillians (Boston) and FunSpot (NH) seem to be the choices.

Anythink this might be a good way to break the logjam?

FunSpot not only has the 2nd largest arcade in the US, but they have a bar on scene as well.  There are many restaurants in the area.

http://www.pealefamily.net/gallery/ has some great pics of FunSpot.  I'm trying to find more pics of us @ the restaurants we went to, but I'm finding that difficult.
