Figuring out what I need for hook up of coin mechanism
« on: November 26, 2016, 02:28:29 pm »
So I'm nearing completion of my rebuilt cabinet that will be a MAME cabinet with Galaga artwork. The original midway cabinet I have came complete with Coin mechanisms and coin box. No key unfortunately for the locks. So a few questions based on the pictures I'm posting below:

1) what type of lock do I need for new locks for both the coin mechanism door and coin deposit box? And where do I get them?

2) the wiring seems to have been cut off for all this stuff, what exactly do I need to hook this back up and get working? Is there any way to tell which wire goes where? Do I have to get an amp to operate this or can I convert this to power via USB somehow?

3) it appears that on the bottom of the coin collector there's an "odometer" of sorts. Not really sure if this is counting hours of operation, or number of "clinks" of coins that have made their way into the deposit bin or what. Any significant use for this?

1) Cam locks. You can pick them up at hardware stores, ebay, amazon etc..

2) The two blue micro switches on the mechs wire up the same as joysticks and buttons. The quarter just trips the switch as it rolls down.  You probably need 5V to light the lights for the coin reject.

The locks are 7/8" cam locks with a 1-1/4" long "tang". Can be bought here:

http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=155_520&products_id=2836

The meter is a coin counting meter. It counts each time a coin switch is tripped provided of course if the meter is wired properly.

You have a Coin Controls brand "over/under" style door. Here is the manual for it:

Thanks guys, I did get the new locks and they work great! a couple of additional questions.

1) is there any maintenance requires on the coin mech? Like for example grease or oiling of certain areas? I couldn't find anything in the manual.

2) I was interested in hooking up a "free play mode" and thought about hooking up a switch to either enable or disable the coin button switches I have on the control panel. In other words, you unlock the coin box area,
Flip a switch and the coin buttons on the control panel add a quarter, or you flip it the other way, and you're forced to put in a quarter. Anyone know if this could be done, and what type of switch I could use to accommodate this?

3) similar question to number 2, but I have two joysticks I'm hooking up to player 1. A standard happ comp, and an 8 way heavy duty happ flight stick. Id like to also wore a switch that forces one of them enabled at a time and never both at once.

Shipping something from the U.S. to Canada for repair/exchange?  Please use USPS to avoid (additional?/excessive?) shipping charges.  PM me if you have any questions.

To add, use HOT soapy water. Then rinse with warm water. Now blow dry with a hair dryer. Don't let water stay on the metal or it will rust.

Got it. Yep already did all that :) just wasn't sure if anything needed oil or what not. I won't use.

Anyone have any ideas on hooking up a switch?

You could also wire player 1 and player 2 coin buttons in parallel with the coin door switches. On the same circuit. Tap into the same wire that goes to the switch  and then Run the new switches back to to ground.  You'll then be able to either use a coin or just press a button.    That's the easiest thing to do. Otherwise you'd have to go thru the "test mode" settings of a game or dip switches in mame and manually turn free play on or off for each game.   I would definitely wire in the "coin" buttons.  If you want to do anything.
We just leave the key in the door so I can open it up and hit the switch on coin mech a bunch of times but honestly just get about $40 of quarters in a bowl and keep it on the table next to your arcade machine. I swear putting quarters in never gets old lol. It's my favourite game.  The quarter game

Regarding 2):
If you have a Ipac or a similar controller which allows shifted inputs then I would use those instead of adding another button.
Mine Is set up so when I use the coin mech it goes through the controller and gives the computer the signal for the coin, But I also have one of my regular buttons set up with a shifted input giving the same signal (if I run out of change LOL)

Regarding 3):
This would be possible to do using a relay.
But it would be alot of work for something I see as being of little use?
