Router questions
« on: January 21, 2004, 06:45:25 pm »
I know I need a 1/16" bit for t-moulding but what bit do I need to route out the hole for my joysticks on the bottom of the control panel so the shaft is long enough.

What joystick are you useing?

The bit you want is a straight/plunge cutting bit.

A hammer and chisel will also work...   ;)

I was in the same position you were in a while ago I had to use a chisel becuase it was an already assembled control panel you can get it pretty even if you have no access to a router and no money to buy one I would suggest getting a cheap chissel.

As for a router bit I borrowed a non plunging router but it works anyway and the bit I have looks basically like a short drill bit that is flat on the bottom.  The little box for it says its a 1/4" steel straight bit.  It has worked for the couple joystick step downs I have had to make.

If you havent bought a bit yet I would suggest getting them from this website as far as price goes they are the cheapest I have seen.

#5341 is the one I got but get the 1/2" one if you need it.  I have used mine and it works great.

Good luck!

Yander,

The pic above was done by Oscar.  He tried using a hammer and chisel just for kicks in response to my suggestion in this thread.

Impressive picture. I will probably go the router route. (play on words not intended) Instead of the chisel unless I can't find anyone with a router. (Im sure I will though)

It's good to know that the chisel will work if needed though.

Also nice website for the bits.

So is MDF short for Melamine board?  I've got my parts on the way and am not thrilled about how I'm going to actually mount the joysticks (3/4" melamine).  I'd love to use Oscar's method, but is MDF melamine board, or won't this work for me?

PS  I'm trying to avoid buying a router just for this.  I've got enough money sunk into it.

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard.
