Servostick vs Ultrasticks concering JoyTray
« on: November 23, 2016, 12:03:15 pm »
Hello

Was hoping for some clarification when it comes to switching a ServoStick and Ultrastick to 4/8 modes using JoyTray.

With the ServoStick, JoyTray sends a signal to physically change the movement of the ServoStick. It can move in all directions, but with a push of a button, it can only physically move four.

But JoyTray can also be used with the Ultrastick. Does this also make a physical change? I'm not sure what it would exactly do.

For example. if I used a Ultrastick for pacman without JoyTray, my joystick would move in 8 directions but the game would only recognize four. If used with JoyTray, am I still moving in all 8 directions or is there a physical change to only move the stick in 4 directions?

I also see there is a  Front-Mount Restrictor Kit: for the Ultrastick. One of the features of this product is:

"Switchable 4 or 8 wy to give a mechanical restriction for those who prefer this in addition to any software map."

Just as JoyTray can change the Ultrastick in a software way (somewhat answering my first question), can it also change the  mechanical restrictor also? Or is it something that I would have to manually adjust myself?

Thanks

The only way for the UltraStik to have any physical restrictions is with the front-mount restrictor kit like you mentioned or you can install restrictor plates in the joystick. If you want to easily change between physical 4/8 way, I would think the front-mount restrictor kit would be the way to go. The restrictor plates are not easily changed (I have the circular one in mine).

I just want to note that any sort of high level Pac-Man play, particularly on speed up basically demands a physically restricted stick. You want that stick to be guided to dead on directions every time.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Indeed. I know that the game will not recognize anything in the corner and such.

I guess my question ultimately is why bother with using UltraSticks with JoyTray? It doesn't physically restrict movement. Does it make it somewhat easier to play 4 way?

It isn't about the corner recognition. I can take my Happ Perfect 360 and flip over the actuator so it is 4-way and it will seamlessly transition from left to up to right to down with no corners. However it still isn't good at playing Pac-Man. However other 4-way games are perfectly fine with a circular movement pattern.
