Selling MAME cabinet...
« on: January 21, 2004, 03:54:33 pm »
Hi,
I seem to remember a thread here some time back with tips on how to sell a Mame cabinet.
Newspapers? Newsgroups? E-bay?

How much Can I expect to get for the cabinet.
Some specs.

25" Arcade monitor.
Athlon 2000 XP CPU
512 MB RAM
80 Gigs HD.
DVD Rom
Two Joysticks, 6 buttons for player.
J-Pac
Arcade VGA

Any one have any suggestions.

Looking to fund the next project.

Thanks

That all depends...

Take those same pieces and set them inside the back of a truck, any truck ... then take those same pieces and set them inside a bus ... are you following me here?

The price , I would assume doesn't just consist of the parts or PC for that matter, but what you're putting them in. Also how good of a job you do restoring a cab.

Take 3 vintage VW Beetles, and set your PC in each one ... I'm sure some one will come along and pick out the nicest bug. Appearance is everything for the good sell!

I've seen cabs go for pretty good money, and they've usually had a pc thats a few years old. I wouldn't concern myself with the guts to much as I would the body.

Just my 2cents.  ;)

Remember EyeCandy ... that usually sells pretty good.

Good points. I think the cabinet looks pretty good.
And while I am not trying to make money out of it (would be nice) I would like to get enough to get a similar (better?) set up than that on another cabinet.
Part of me wants to keep the computer (along with the other hardware) and just sell cab and monitor since I figure I could always re built everything from scratch. (this is the fun part after all). But it would make the cabinet more attractive if it was just a plug and play solution. (instant cabinet)

I am would like to know how to advertise the sale of the cabinet. Mame does not allow use of its name to make money. I think I saw some guidelines here in the past.
It included things like, delete mame (and all roms) and any emulators.
include software licences of software installed. (OS, etc)
I do have several PC games on the cabinet that would be willing to part with.

Thanks

I hear ya,

I thought about the legalities of MAME, and I'm the last one to want to step on someone's toes ... so I thought about this ...

I suppose just the sell the PC, ( without sounding to much like a smart alec ) in an oversized case.  ;)

I see some the vendors selling a 3&1 , or 6&1, they even have a 24&1 Arcade Classics , which is nothing more than a MAME in its own right. So perhaps, a GamingPC ... 24&1 unit.

 ....

I remember this guy at the FleaMarket once who was selling PiratedSoftware ... off all things to sell at the fleamarket ..

but anyway , when I asked him how he could sell that here, or even make money from it ..

his response was  .... " I'm not selling the software ... I'm selling the CD , which just happens to have some programs on it"    ;)

Unless you have a very good classifieds section--just go with ebay--you can't get a cheaper listing considering the coverage, a full color photo and a very long winded description.  make sure you emphasize shipping since only a few people know how to move something that large across the country.

Also, make sure the ad clearly states no roms present--what you do after that is on your conscience ;)  I can almost guarantee your buyer will be somewhat local and will want to test (play ;D) it first as well as pick up for shipping--I know I would.

Also list it here (some people may flame you for this and that but then again if they're not buying it who cares) as well as the newsgroups.  I sold mine fairly quickly doing this and the guy lived 1 hour away and was extremely satisfied.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

If your paper has an online searchable classified I would try to get it in there I through my local one every couple of days.  Just make sure you list it as an arcade machine / video game otherwise nobody will find it.

Also there is this board and well as a newsgroup that you could try after those I would try ebay.

Pull that expensive computer out and replace it with a cheap used P3 or athlon (500-733 mhz will be fine), and install Mame .60 on it instead of the current version.

That will not change the sale price of your cabinet one bit, but it will allow you to keep your GOOD computer.

In the past I have found that it doesn't matter how fast or slow the PC is inside the cabinet. What matters is how it looks and what games it can play. The games that most potential customers will be interested in do not require a good computer.
