High Score Competition #204: Streets Of Rage II
« on: November 07, 2016, 08:25:29 am »

----------------------
Game Name : Streets Of Rage II
ROM Name  = "mp_sor2"
----------------------

Settings:
default : Lives 3, difficulty Normal

Controls:
   Joystick: 8-way joystick
   Buttons: 3 (Attack, Jump, Special)

Its my first pick and ive not seen to many side scrolling beet em ups so here is my fave of all time :)

Sega 1992,

Streets of Rage 2, released in Japan as Bare Knuckle II: The Requiem of the Deadly Battle (ベア・ナックルII 死闘への鎮魂歌 Bea Nakkuru Tsū: ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---ō he no Chinkonka?), is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game developed and published by Sega in 1992 for the Mega Drive/Genesis console. It is the second game in the Streets of Rage series, a sequel to Streets of Rage and followed by Streets of Rage 3.

The game introduced two new characters: Max Thunder and Eddie "Skate" Hunter, brother of Adam Hunter from the original game. It was critically acclaimed upon release and has since been listed among the best games of all time.

Plot

A year has passed since the events of Streets of Rage. To celebrate the defeat of the mysterious 'Mr. X' and his syndicate the previous year, Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding met at their favorite nightspot in the city and spent their time reminiscing about their vigilante crusade against 'Mr. X' and his organization. Axel and Blaze had moved out of the city after the adventure from last year. Axel has begun working as a part-time bodyguard and Blaze teaches dance classes. Adam has since rejoined the police force and lives in a small house with his younger brother.

The next morning, Axel received a phone call from Eddie 'Skate' Hunter, Adam's younger brother. Skate had arrived at home from school and was shocked to find his house in ruin and his older brother missing. Attached to the front door was a picture of Adam chained to a wall at the feet of Mr. X. The criminals began to retake the streets once more. Beatings and lootings took place regularly and in broad daylight. Chaos reigned in the city, far worse than before.

Realizing that Mr. X and his syndicate has returned for revenge against them and the city, Axel and Skate waste no time in telling Blaze about the unexpected situation and Blaze herself is determined to help Axel out in defeating Mr. X and rescuing Adam. Accompanied by Adam's young brother Skate and Axel's friend, a professional wrestler named Max Thunder, Axel and Blaze set forth on a rescue mission, which will take them from the city all the way to Mr. X's hideout on a desolate island, where they will eventually face Mr. X and his bodyguard Shiva.

Unlike the other two games in the series, this game has only one ending, the "good" ending where Mr. X is defeated and Adam is rescued. The five heroes then take a helicopter to leave Mr. X's island.

It's a MegaPlay title, so it's an actual arcade version that was released by Sega.

It even has a proper coin system built into the games, and various tweaks like removing 1-ups that would have made things too easy for arcade use (unlike MegaTech which is just console roms on a timer)

In fairness, while it's official it's a bit of a rubbish system tho, many of the changes made to the games make them significantly worse than the actual console releases, for example Sonic 1 has all the 'slower' stages like Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone removed as well as strict timers on each level and many power-ups removed, special stages are gone too (which, unless I'm missing something means you can't actually get the chaos emeralds or good ending!)

Yeah its a mega play version and all the 1ups have been taken out of the game so you cant pick any of the secret ones up to get you through lol

The difficulty is slightly higher than the genesis version to.

I gave it a go earlier so here is one to get us started.

The only thing I can see which is easier than the console version is the timer has been taken out but to be honest I never ran out of time anyway so not really much help :p

Yup :)

I like the score board on this version as well.

Gives you the KO's as well as the score, level and character.

First blind run.  Urg.

Haven't played this since probably 1994.  Great game but I'm tired of punch/wait/punch/wait/punch/wait/punch/wait

I like to play the big guy, but can't get as far with him. Axel's tap tap uppercut punch seems to be a bit of an exploit.

Wouldnt call it a exploit lol
Theres certain enemies that it does not work well on (like that wrestler ;) )

All the characters have a certain playing style that suits them thats all a little different.

Max is an amazingly powerful character but you have to be strategic with him because he is so slow.
Same with Skate but for opposite reasons lol

Axel and Blaze are quite balanced and easy to play with.

Thats one of the reasons I loved this game so much as a kid, the moves are so simple but there was a great deal of variety for such simple controls.

But it's a lot more boring and a scorewise decent run would probably take a lot more time than an R-type one.

Haven't played this one since my last attempt but giving it a few spins tonight.

Score is ab the same.  Gonna see if I can sneak in some massive upgrade somehow.

Thinking my best bet is definitely to play with Cody White-Boy Ryu Axel

That boss just messes me up.  Don't think I'll log better than this but maybe if I can find a rhythm on him!

Yeah the key to him is keep moving with random movement.
If you stay in one place to long he will destroy you lol

A little better with Blaze. Just can't go the distance with Max, even though I find him the most fun to play  :)

Well played that man!

I had another go this morning, got as far as the Boxer but as usual he pummeled me and couldnt quite beat that score lol

Got 2 more KO's though lol

I used the sword quite a bit more in stage 5 than normal which I wonder makes a difference to the score?
Never really noticed before!
